Intelligence Officer

As a member of the military, Intelligence Officers provide intelligence support in operations, planning, and decision‑making. Their work influences military and national security, as well as the political and public relations of the government.
Responsibilities
Recognize and analyze information likely to affect military operations, national policies, and objectives.
Command, direct, and control an intelligence unit, section, or team.
Operate and manage information technology systems.
Advise and plan employment of sophisticated intelligence collection and surveillance systems.
Safeguard highly classified material.
Work Environment
Intelligence Officers typically work in an office environment but can also participate in local, national, and international operations under various conditions.
Entry Plans
Direct Entry – Candidates with a university degree may be placed directly into the required on‑the‑job training after basic and officer qualification training.
Paid Education – CAF may cover a bachelor’s degree program in the Royal Military College System, with full salary, medical, dental care, and vacation pay.
Training
Basic officer training lasts 12 weeks at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School. Further training includes second language instruction (2–9 months) and a six‑month course at the Canadian Forces School of Military Intelligence covering intelligence skills, strategic analysis, threat assessment, and operational support. Additional specialized courses are available, such as:
Strategic Defence Intelligence Analyst
Advanced Intelligence Officer Course
Counter‑Intelligence
Interrogator
Source Handling
Imagery Analysis
Part‑time Options
Position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve across Canada. Reserve members serve part‑time at their local unit, may remain while working or studying, and are paid 92.8 % of Regular Force rates. They receive a reasonable benefits package and may qualify for a pension plan.
Employment Context
Intelligence Officers may serve in the Royal Canadian Navy, Army, or Royal Canadian Air Force, providing intelligence analysis for operations, planning, and decision‑making. They can serve full‑time on a fixed term basis or deploy on military missions domestically or abroad.
