Overview
As a member of the military, an Artillery Officer coordinates and executes indirect fire support, ground‑based air defense, surveillance, target acquisition, and provides tactical advice as part of the combat arms team, working closely with armored, infantry, and combat engineering regiments as well as other support arms on and off the battlefield.

There are three specialized areas:
Field Artillery Officer, Air Defense Officer, and Target Acquisition Officer, each becoming experts in their electronics and tactical employment.

Expertise by Specialty

Field Artillery Officer – Howitzers and mortars, battlefield surveillance radars, observation & fire control systems, coordination and integration of indirect fire and close air support.

Air Defense Officer – Air surveillance radars, tactical data link systems, future ground‑based air defence systems.

Target Acquisition Officer – Uncrewed aerial systems, acoustic weapons locating systems, weapons locating radars, artillery intelligence and counter‑battery fires.

Work Environment
An Artillery Officer can be deployed in any terrain:
Arctic tundra, tropical jungle, desert, mountains, or urban areas. Deployments may be overseas or in Canada for civil authorities during emergencies. Initial posting is to one of five artillery regiments. Movement within the force is common; reserve members serve part‑time locally.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must hold a university degree. The CAF may place a degree holder directly into the required on‑the‑job training. Regular Officer Training Plan involves a bachelor’s degree through the Royal Military College System, full salary, medical and dental care, vacation, and full pay for the service period.

Training Path
Training includes:

Basic Officer Training ( BMOQ ) – 12 weeks at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School.

Basic Military Officer Qualification ( BMOQA ) – 12 weeks at the Infantry School.

Artillery School courses – leadership, weapon systems, battlefield tactics, and specialization training.

Field training – reconnaissance, deployment of howitzers, firing data calculation, target acquisition systems, and fire support coordination.

After initial training, officers may specialize further:
Ground‑Based Air Defense, Forward Observation, Target Acquisition, or Joint Terminal Attack Control.

Part‑time Options
The position is available for part‑time service in the Primary Reserve. Reserve members train at their local army base or armoury, may work part‑time while studying or working a civilian job, and are paid during training. They are not required to relocate, though they may volunteer for deployment domestically or abroad.
