The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Auxiliary is a group of dedicated volunteers who work with regular force OPP officers to ensure safety and well-being for the Province of Ontario.
Auxiliary members have no police authority. They must rely on the same arrest provisions as regular citizens. There are some instances when an Auxiliary member may have the authority of a police officer. This can occur in an emergency situation, or where the OPP requires additional strength to assist with a special event.
The Auxiliary uniform is distinct from the uniform of an OPP provincial constable, as Auxiliary members wear light blue shirts instead of dark blue and have their own Auxiliary cap badges and checkered hat bands. The word Auxiliary is embroidered on their shoulder epaulettes and displayed on their jackets and vests, clearly identifying them as Auxiliary members.
The Auxiliary is made up of people from diverse backgrounds and occupations, including civilians.
DutiesOPP Auxiliary’s mission is “to provide fully trained volunteer Auxiliary members to assist in the delivery of traffic safety and community-based crime prevention initiatives as well as to perform police duties only in special circumstances, including an emergency that OPP provincial constables are not sufficiently numerous to deal with.”
Auxiliary members support OPP provincial constables. Their duties may include patrols with regular members and assisting with community events, seat belt clinics, R.I.D.E initiatives, safety displays, presentations, victim assistance and ceremonial duties. Members perform many duties outdoors, often in unfavourable weather conditions.
