Utilities Maintenance Operator (All Tiers) (South County)
Base pay range: $37,752.00/yr - $80,600.00/yr
Utilities Maintenance Operator is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and construction of underground utility piping and appurtenances in field conditions for the Public Utilities Department.
Ideal Candidate- Experience operating hand tools and specialized, light, and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of water and reclaimed water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
- Ability/willingness to work outside in subtropical climate, adverse weather, and high noise levels.
- Can lift/carry objects up to 50 pounds, climb ladders up to 35 feet, work in confined spaces and manholes.
- Flexible to work overtime, rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies.
- Valid Class "A" or "A"-Restricted Commercial Driver's License with combination, air brakes, tanker endorsements within 1 year of hire.

- Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
- Possession of a permit Class "A" or "A"-Restricted Commercial Driver's License with combination, air brakes, and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire (Tier
1). - Possession of a current State of Florida Class 3 Water Distribution System Operator License or higher (Tier
1). - Valid Florida Class C or higher water treatment plant operator license (Tier
2). - Possession of a current State of Florida Class 2 Water Distribution System Operator License or higher (Tier
3). - Possession of a current State of Florida Class 1 Water Distribution System Operator License or higher (Tier
4).
- Operate, maintain, and repair all phases of water, reclaimed, and wastewater systems.
- Inspect cross-connection controls; install, evaluate, and repair master meter assemblies, backflow prevention, and other devices.
- Diagnose malfunctions using manufacturers' handbooks, codes, and standard operating procedures to ensure efficiency and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations for safety/environmental hazards.
- Operate specialized, light, and heavy equipment; locate and mark location of underground utilities.
- Assist in setting up well-point systems for de-watering construction and maintenance sites; erect and dismantle shoring/trench box.
- Assist in excavating work sites, as required to facilitate installation, maintenance, or repair of lines and restore site to original condition when work is complete.
- Utilize the Job Qualification Standards, PUD Technical Specifications, Utility Accommodation Guide, Industry Publications and Standards, and other related guidance for subject/task fundamentals.
- Provide instruction, guidance, and training to lower level staff as required.
- Maintain all job‑related credentials; work unsupervised and perform team leader duties while in the field, including enforcing policy, safety procedures, and training employees.
- Provide information and respond as appropriate to public information requests.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Knowledge of water or reclaimed water distribution or wastewater collection systems.
- Knowledge of department and Field Maintenance Service policies, practices, and standard operating procedures.
- Knowledge of current trade practices and technology.
- Skill in the safe operation of most equipment and tools used to maintain water and wastewater distribution systems, including service trucks and/or trailers.
