Job PurposeIn keeping a tradition of excellence, the purpose of the Teacher Special Education is to help students learn subject matter and skills that contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible individuals. The role involves developing and implementing student IEPs, coordinating activities with general‑education teachers, and providing direct instruction in a SPED self‑contained classroom.
Responsibilities- Plan, develop, and implement the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Assist in implementing and ensuring completion of related services specified in the IEP.
- Teach assigned classes at the designated school and satisfy scheduling requirements set by the Principal.
- Design a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
- Create a conducive learning environment appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Prepare for classes, providing written evidence of preparation upon request.
- Encourage the setting and maintenance of high standards of classroom behavior.
- Guide learning toward curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media appropriate to the students’ abilities.
- Implement the district’s educational philosophy and instructional goals.
- Carry out district initiatives relevant to the students’ grade, placement, or age group.
- Assess students regularly and provide progress reports per district and state policy.
- Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law and district policy.
- Assist administration in implementing policies, rules, and procedures governing student life and conduct.
- Be available to students and parents for education‑related issues outside instructional hours, as reasonably required.
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistants.
- Lead and attend staff meetings, trainings, and committee work as applicable.
- Pursue professional growth and development, including ongoing education and conference attendance as required for licensure maintenance.
- Use district‑owned assets responsibly, following policy guidelines.
- Undergo periodic evaluations in accordance with state and board procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and workplace information.
- Ensure regular, dependable, in‑person attendance.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Board of Education, superintendent, or district administration.
- Read, understand, and abide by the Employee Conduct Policy and all relevant district, state, and federal policies.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education.
- Valid Mississippi Teaching Credential or an appropriate emergency certification issued by the Mississippi Educational Board.
- Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, and handle equipment such as a keyboard and video display terminal.
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, reach, crouch, or crawl.
- Must lift up to 35 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
- Visual acuity required for close work.
- Active school campus setting both indoors and outdoors.
- Noise level generally low to moderate, occasionally high.
