Job Purpose

In keeping a tradition of excellence, the Teacher Librarian helps students learn required subject matter and skills that contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible individuals. The librarian collaborates with teachers and administrators to align library services with instructional goals.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Consult with teachers and administrators to create long‑range and short‑range plans for the library in support of the school’s instructional program.
  • Develop and implement library policies and procedures for effective library use.
  • Plan for and provide necessary resources, technology, and instructional services that align with Mississippi library standards and curriculum goals.
  • Plan instruction that meets the diversity of students’ backgrounds, cultures, skills, learning levels, language proficiencies, interests, and special needs.
  • Develop and monitor a budget for the library in consultation with school/district administration.
  • Provide a balanced, comprehensive, and up‑to‑date collection of print and non‑print materials to support the instructional program within district resources.
  • Classify, catalogue, and organize materials according to a standard classification system for easy accessibility.
  • Maintain accurate library records and statistics on the use of materials.
  • Conduct a yearly inventory to account for materials and discard inappropriate, worn, or outdated items.
  • Encourage reading of various forms of literature by maintaining awareness of students’ reading interests and providing guidance in material selection.
  • Maintain effective communication with staff and students, informing them of new acquisitions and library services.
  • Determine instructional needs within the library program by consulting with relevant committees and stakeholders.
  • Collaboratively teach information and digital literacy as an integral part of the curriculum.
  • Provide training to students and teachers in the use of resources, technology, and equipment.
  • Assist students and teachers in locating information and resources for research.
  • Organize the library for optimal use by students and faculty.
  • Demonstrate high expectations for all students and maintain a positive library environment that produces learning opportunities.
  • Participate in professional learning opportunities and/or belong to professional library organizations, applying learning to benefit students and teachers.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, students, and families about the library program and available resources.
  • Advocate for the library program in the school and community.
  • Promote the Library Bill of Rights and Intellectual Freedom.
Qualifications
  • Education Level: Bachelor’s degree in Education with an endorsement in Library Media.
  • Certification:
    Hold an appropriate Mississippi Teaching Credential or valid emergency certification issued by the state of Mississippi Educational Board.
Physical Demands

Work Environment

The work environment is the entire active school campus both inside and outside facilities. The noise level is usually low to moderate, occasionally high. The environment is not a standard office setting.

Salary, days, and work year as established by the Rankin County Board of Education.

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Rankin County School Board policy on Evaluation of Employees.
