Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) is a unique Indigenous Institute, recognized by community, government, and institutions of higher learning, as a Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Knowledge. SNP offers postsecondary, secondary, trades education and training. SNP has formal partnerships with nine publicly funded Ontario Universities and Colleges and collaborates with six Ontario-based Indigenous owned and controlled post‑secondary Institutes.

JOB PURPOSE
Reporting to the Associate Dean, Skilled Trades, the Program & Placement Support Specialist supports the delivery of Skilled Trades programs through in‑shop supervision, supplementary practical instruction, and coordinated shop operations. The role works closely with instructors, students, support services, and industry partners to promote student success, safe and effective practical learning environments, and strong program outcomes. This position is expected to perform duties using initiative, problem‑solving, and positive communication under minimum managerial supervision.

The Program & Placement Support Specialist is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:nivalues of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

KEY

ACCOUNTABILITIES
Support Practical Learning & In‑Shop Instruction (30%)

Assisting instructors in‑shop supervision and enforcing safety procedures

Providing supplemental practical instruction (one‑to‑one or group) for students needing additional support

Supporting students on Student Success Contracts to meet program expectations

Responding to student questions related to tools, equipment, and shop assignments

Other related duties, as required.

Shop Operations, Safety & Equipment Coordination (25%)

Preparing shops/labs for practical instruction and demonstrations

Coordinating equipment inventories, repairs, servicing, and monthly inspections

Following up on tag‑outs and safety deficiencies with Facilities and relevant units

Supporting Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) testing activities

Other related duties, as required.

Program & Student Support Administration (Non‑Office Based) (20%)

Developing and managing attendance tracking for classes and placements

Coordinating subsidy and transportation support reporting

Maintaining schedules for shop/lab usage and other physical resources

Responding to program and course inquiries

Other related duties, as required.

Work Placement, Industry & External Engagement (15%)

Identifying and supporting work placements, apprenticeships, co‑ops, and awards

Maintaining relationships with industry partners and regional high schools
- Conducting student check‑ins during placements

Supporting recruitment, job fairs, orientations, and community outreach events

Other related duties, as required.

Program Planning, Collaboration & Organizational Participation (10%)

Supporting funding applications and gathering required documentation

Developing and maintaining an annual work plan

Promoting a respectful, collaborative, and culturally supportive learning environment consistent with SNP values

EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE
Completion of post‑secondary college or university of one to two years in a skilled trade such as welding or machining is required.

Forklift and tow motor certification an asset and must be willing to obtain.

EXPERIENTIAL KNOWLEDGE / CULTURE AND LANGUAGE EXPERTISE
Over 1 year and including 3 years of relevant industry experience in a skilled trades environment (such as welding, machining, or a related field) is required to independently carry out the full responsibilities of the role. This experience must include hands‑on work with tools, equipment, and shop safety practices, as well as familiarity with industry standards and practical learning environments.
