Clinical Scholars are experienced nurses with frontline experience who are employed in supernumerary positions to provide mentorship to newly graduated nurses, internationally educated nurses (IENs), and nurses looking to upskill, supporting their transition into the workforce.
We are seeking a highly experienced RN to support the Critical Care Unit and Emergency Department.
Clinical Scholars receive mentorship premiums that apply to this role and the standard applicable hourly compensation.
Role SummaryReporting to the Manager, Professional Practice & Education, Clinical Scholars are required to focus exclusively on mentoring nurses in their transition into the nursing workforce without a patient case load.
Clinical Scholars are responsible for supporting program beneficiaries in their nursing practice and integration into the clinical area in accordance with organizational and professional standards, and in collaboration with clinical teams.
Role Responsibilities- Provide mentorship to newly graduated, internationally educated, and upskilling nurses to support their transition to practice.
- Provide on‑unit support for these groups and professional development activities at all hospital sites.
- Support unit leadership in competency evaluations and report concerns to unit leadership.
- Participate in data collection and reporting requirements as per ministry requirements for the Clinical Scholars program.
- Registered Nurse (RN) registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in the General Class in good standing.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
- For Critical Care/Emergency Department positions: current ACLS, critical care or ED experience, including triage certification.
- At least five (5) years of experience in frontline nursing care in a hospital inpatient or critical care setting.
- Knowledge of the unique needs of Internationally Educated Nurses.

- A passion for sharing knowledge with others and contributing to the advancement of nursing.
- Demonstrated experience teaching and precepting new staff/students, including providing constructive feedback.
- Outstanding communication skills and demonstrated ability to have difficult yet supportive conversations aligned with BCHS values.
- Excellent knowledge of BCHS clinical documentation systems.
- Excellent evidence‑based clinical skills and competencies.
- Demonstrated ability to respond positively to change, work independently, organize, set priorities, problem‑solve, develop efficient workflows, meet timelines, and lead continuous quality improvement initiatives.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to work all shifts.
- Work alongside new graduate nurses, IENs, and upskilling nurses on the unit to assist them in performing standard work.
- Practice clinical skills with learners before they perform them on/with patients.
- Assist with the creation of SMART goals.
- Assist with the creation of learning plans in collaboration with educators and managers.
