Title: Parking Enforcement Officer
Department: Parking Enforcement
Nature of Work: Nonsworn position with primary responsibility of enforcing state laws and town ordinances related to parking within the Town of Brattleboro.
Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m., rotating schedule including weekends and occasional evenings/holidays as required.
Current Contracted Wage: FY26 $ 21.26 per hour
Supervision Received: Directly supervised by the Police Chief or designee; generally supervised by Officers in Charge (OIC).
Supervision Exercised: None
Essential Responsibilities- Gain and maintain access to confidential databases as necessary for this position.
- Assist in training of new Parking Enforcement Officers.
- Be accountable for timely, accurate, and complete reporting.
- Care for and ensure proper maintenance of equipment and supplies under control.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public concerning parking regulations.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in written or electronic correspondence with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Coordinate parking enforcement activities with other divisions of the Police Department and other town departments.
- Direct and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
- Testify in court proceedings.
- Use a mobile device and various applications to complete duties; occasionally issue manual tickets.
- Operate a handheld radio.
- Maintain, sort, enter, and/or file data relating to parking.
- Operate standard and task‑specific office equipment.
- Immobilize vehicles as necessary.
- Perform regular maintenance and minor repairs of parking kiosks.
- Conduct extensive foot patrol in relation to enforcement duties.

Competencies NeededHigh school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in a public environment or related field.
Experience Required- Read, interpret, apply, and enforce parking regulations, laws, and ordinances.
- Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Operate town vehicles safely and consistently in accordance with existing law and regulations.
- Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, including the ability to use common and position‑specific computer applications.
- Maintain functional knowledge of existing laws, ordinances, relevant court decisions, and department rules and procedures.
- Work independently while exercising independent judgment.
- Exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact when resolving problems.
- Communicate effectively with the public, elected officials, and other government agencies.
- Learn, stay current in the field, retain instructions, policies, and procedures, while continuing to learn new methods and skills.
- Successfully complete a physical examination, background check, and drug screening prior to employment.
- Perform outdoor work consistently in all weather conditions, including during winter months.
- Actively support a welcoming and respectful workplace for all, including cultural competency, while working effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
The PEO will work in a variety of environments, including climate‑controlled buildings and outdoors during inclement weather; they operate vehicles in inclement weather, and may have to stand, walk, or sit for long periods. Bending, reaching, lifting, and occasionally moving may be required.
