Nature of work:
The Recreation & Parks Program Coordinator performs responsible work involving the planning and supervision of recreation programs, activities, youth sports and special events in coordination with the Director and Assistant Director.

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours per week (with occasional evening, holidays and weekend hours as necessary and coordinated with Director).

Salary: FY’26 Step 1 $ 24.78 per hour.

Supervision Exercised:
Supervision exercised over summer seasonal program staff and youth sports volunteers. Works in collaboration with all Rec & Parks staff.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Supervision and coordination of the summer day camp program, special activities, summer activities, Community Center activities, and youth sports leagues (schedules, uniforms, & volunteer coaches).
  • Communicates with the administrative staff to coordinate weekly recreation schedules for the newspaper and radio stations.
  • Works with the Recreation & Parks Director & Assistant Director to ensure coordination of recreation programs and activities.
  • Attends meetings relative to the Recreation & Parks Department.
  • Answers the telephone, greets the public, and responds to inquiries regarding programs and facility use.
  • Utilizes desktop publishing software to assist with marketing activities & programs (i.e. posters, flyers, & brochures).
  • Works within budget guidelines to purchase supplies, equipment, and uniforms for programs.
  • Recruits and trains volunteer youth sports, coaches, and program instructors.
  • Works with the Recreation Software Registration/Scheduling Program (Rec Trac)
  • Enforces the department safety rules and regulations.
  • Involved with the hiring and training of seasonal staff.

Competencies Needed:

We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills a qualifying, unless specifically stated as required.

  • Proven experience as a program coordinator or relevant administrative position.
  • 1st Aide & CPR certification (must obtain within 1st year of employment).
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work effectively in the absence of close supervision.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, including the ability to use common computer applications. (Microsoft Suite, Google).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact in receiving office calls and in making proper disposition of problems and appointments.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Flexibility, excellent time management and high attention to detail and capacity to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to balance multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A willingness to examine existing systems and refine or improve them as necessary.
  • Must be forward-thinking and open to innovation and change.
  • Must be able to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Work Environment:

This job occasionally operates in a professional office environment. Light strength demands include exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree. Physical Demands:
Continuously requires sitting, handling, visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and hearing. Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, walking on even and uneven ground, and talking. Occasionally requires lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, bending, and twisting.

Equipment use, such as office telephone, copier, calculator, fax machine, camera, mode of transportation with frequent traveling between Gibson Aiken Center and Living Memorial Park and events, and use cell phone, laptop with repetitive keyboarding motions. Must be able to set up and take down program equipment: volleyball nets, badminton nets, 9 ft. basketball hoops, archery equipment, etc.
