Overview

Senior Structural Engineer - Substation (San Diego, Brea, Los Angeles, Walnut Creek) at Burns & McDonnell. The role leads structural design for electrical substation projects and related work in the utility industry, supporting local clients in the California market.

• Lead structural design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion to meet project needs and be guided by project managers.
• Lead and oversee rigid bus analysis and the design of electrical substation steel structures, equipment foundations, structure foundations and secondary oil containment.
• Perform design and analysis in California adhering to seismic requirements and IEEE 693 seismic qualifications.
• Lead a multidisciplinary team to ensure project success; present designs and proposals to clients, permitting authorities, and stakeholders.
• Coordinate with clients, contractors, and vendors; participate in project proposals and qualification statements to meet targets for financial performance and scope management.
• Train and mentor less experienced engineers in technical and professional development.
• Perform quality control reviews and ensure adherence to QA/QC processes.
• Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget staffing planning, construction planning, and change-order management.
• Apply expert knowledge of structural concepts, codes and procedures; develop non-standard design solutions for complex projects.
• Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
• Build relationships with existing and new clients to develop new business opportunities and ensure customer satisfaction.
• Coordinate effectively with other engineering disciplines and comply with company and site safety policies.

• Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Professional Engineer (PE). Licensure in California and as a Structural Engineer (SE) preferred.
• Seven (7) years of substation structural engineering experience; consulting experience preferred. Master of Science in civil engineering may substitute for one year of experience.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a dynamic problem-solving environment; strong critical thinking skills.
• Knowledge of substation electrical physical design principles.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong computer skills (e.g., RISA 3D, RISA FDN, HILTI, MFAD, RAM Connection, Idea Statica).
• Strong knowledge of structural design codes (e.g., ASCE 113, CBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, IEEE 693).
• Experience leading discipline design for large projects and delegating tasks to team members; ability to lead and resolve issues in a team environment.
• Demonstrated critical thinking and attention to detail; facilitation, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
