Responsibilities

This role performs routine and special tests; coordinates implementation of new procedures; resolves day‑to‑day lab technical problems; and notifies appropriate supervisor or Pathologist. The role assumes supervisory responsibilities of the department section, coordinates laboratory operations, monitors performance improvement/quality control activities, exhibits knowledge of and adherence to institution/department policies and procedures, assists supervisor in maintaining a section compliant with accrediting/regulatory agencies, and maintains confidentiality of patient related information at all times.

Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree (required).
  • Work Experience:

    4 years experience (required); one year of appropriate clinical lab experience in a qualified Director. Rotations in general lab require documentation or signed letter from medical director stating competence in the section.
  • Preferred Experience:

    Advanced analytical skills necessary to analyze complex data and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Certifications:

    Current license or temporary license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist‑Generalist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist‑Specialist in the state of practice; meets CLIA and CAP requirements. Holds ASCP Medical Technologist certification; any incumbent certified by ASCP on or after Jan 1 2004 must complete Maintenance Program. Preferred:
    Current license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist – Specialist in the state of practice.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Proficiency with Windows‑style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a controlled environment, following safety measures to minimize exposure to chemicals, body fluids, blood borne pathogens.
  • Advanced analytical skills to collect data, perform calculations, maintain system logs, and operate laboratory computer equipment.
  • Judgment skills to identify and solve problems, handle difficult situations.
  • Stress management skills to maintain professional atmosphere and provide quality service.
  • Skills to work independently.
Job Duties
  • Coordinates clinical competency in section.
  • Performs routine and special lab procedures.
  • Maintains regulatory compliance and performance improvement.
  • Assists and consults with the laboratory supervisor/director.
  • Maintains competency, meets goals and objectives.
  • Adapts behavior to specific patient population, respecting privacy, method of introduction, explanation of services, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other related duties as required.

Physical Demands

Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly. Routine duties expose the employee to blood, body fluid and tissue. Occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous medications is present.
