Job Title: Tunnel Facilities Trades Worker II (Journeyman Level) – Eisenhower Tunnel

Employer: Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)

Location: Summit County, CO

Salary: $2220-$2441 biweekly (equivalent to $57,708-$63,468 annually). In addition, eligibility for a $2000 per month housing stipend and a 20% shift differential for weekend work.

Job Summary: The Tunnel Facilities Trades Worker II is responsible for performing skilled journeyman electrical, mechanical, and plumbing work on the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel’s systems, including electrical, mechanical, and plumbing equipment, ventilation systems, and related controls. The role supports maintenance, repairs, and operational readiness of the tunnel’s complex equipment and responds to emergencies.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain, install, repair, and adjust building heating systems, including hydronic, forced air, gas‑fired boiler, electrical baseboard, and gas‑fired radiant bay heaters.
  • Under direction of the licensed electrician, perform electrical services on equipment within the tunnel structure, including substations, generators, backup controls, transformers, switching equipment, lighting, elevators, heat tape networks, and tunnel lighting systems.
  • Maintain, install, repair, and adjust water, sewage, potable water distribution, and fire protection systems, including valves, pumps, filters, chlorinators, hydrants, and heat tape.
  • Maintain, install, repair, and adjust 56 dual‑speed motors (12.5–600 hp) and 28 ventilation fans (up to 500 CFM).
  • Safely drive and operate a variety of equipment, such as tandem truck, loader, backhoe, grader, sweeper, wrecker, pumper/rescue truck, aerial device, and forklift.
  • Respond to tunnel and area vehicle fires using firefighting equipment and PPE.
  • Participate in tunnel maintenance projects, assist in inspecting contractor work, and test installed equipment.
  • Complete work orders and prepare cost estimates, material lists, and inventory documents.
  • Attend safety meetings and training (fire response, hazardous material training).
  • Maintain constant awareness of hazards and risks; perform daily safety checks.
  • Assist with snow plowing and traffic control during large winter/snow events.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience Only: At least 3 years of experience in one or more of the following: electrical, HVAC, machinist, plumbing, or related trades.
  • Education & Experience: A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least 3 years. Education or formalized apprenticeship in trades will be considered on a year‑by‑year basis. Experience with the above trades will be considered.

Work Environment & Requirements
  • Shift: 1:00 pm – 11:30 pm, Monday‑Thursday (10 h). Call‑back schedule and overtime (5–10 h/week) may apply.
  • Exposures: loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, dust, solvents, sealants, glues, transformer oils.
  • Physical: work at extreme temperatures, varying weather, elevations up to 12,000 ft. Use of ladders, scissor lifts, heavy traffic proximity, and confined spaces.
  • Equipment operation and possession of a Class A or B CDL (no air‑brake restriction) required within 6 months of hire.
  • May be required to plow during large winter/snow events.
