New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.
Base pay for this position is typically between $1956-$2151/biweekly ($50,856-$55,926/annually).
Additional compensation: housing stipend $2000/month, 20% shift differential for weekend shifts, 14% shift differential for overnight shifts, optional CDOT‑owned housing.
About the Work UnitThe Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is responsible for operating and maintaining the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT). The Special Crew Unit maintains and repairs the tunnel facility’s electrical and mechanical equipment, including a complex 25,000 volt electrical system, generators, motors, ventilation fans, control systems, and lighting. The unit also services emergencies, snow‑removal shifts, and avalanche missions.
About the PositionCDOT has two openings (Crew C and Crew D) for a Tunnel Facilities Trade Worker I. The role assists with electrical, mechanical, and plumbing work on the tunnel’s electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems, as well as associated controls, fresh water, sewage, HVAC, and ventilation.
Your duties and responsibilities- Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting building heating systems.
- Under direction of the licensed electrician, assist in performing electrical services on tunnel equipment.
- Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting water, sewage, and fire protection systems.
- Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting 56 dual‑speed motors and 28 ventilation fans.
- Safely drive and operate a variety of equipment (tandem truck, loader, backhoe, grader, sweeper, wrecker, pumper/rescue truck, aerial device, forklift).
- Respond to tunnel and area vehicle fires with firefighting equipment and PPE.
- Participate in tunnel maintenance projects and inspect contractor work.
- Complete work orders and prepare cost estimates, materials, and parts inventories.
- Attend safety meetings and training (fire response, hazardous material training).
- Maintain constant awareness of hazards and perform daily safety checks.
- Learn safety procedures and guidance materials.
- Assist with snow plowing and traffic control during large winter/snow events.
- Other job duties as assigned.
- Personal protective equipment (uniforms, boots, hard hats, gloves, safety vest, respirator, tools).
- CDL testing, training, and partial reimbursement for renewal.

- Schedule for Crew C: 9:00 pm–5:30 am (8 h) Wed & Thu; 5:00 pm–5:30 am (12 h) Fri & Sat.
- Schedule for Crew D: 5:00 am–5:30 pm (12 h) Sun & Mon; 5:00 am–1:30 pm (8 h) Tue & Wed.
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gasses, dust, etc.
- Use of personal protective equipment and solvents, sealants, glues, cleaners, transformer oils.
- Work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, elevations up to 12,000 ft.
- Work proximity to heavy traffic, small enclosed spaces, ladders, scissor lifts (10–20 ft).
- Operates CDOT vehicles and requires Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B within 6 months.
- On‑call schedule and potential overtime 5–10 h/week.
- May be required to plow during large winter/snow events.
- At least 2 years of experience in electrical, HVAC, machinist, plumbing, or other relevant trades.
- A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least 2 years.
- Education or formalized apprenticeship considered on a year‑by‑year basis.
- Experience with electrical, HVAC, machinist, plumbing or other relevant trades considered.
- Demonstrated success with duties listed above.
- Years of state service experience related to duties.
- High work/personal ethics and integrity.
