Patient Care Technician - PCT role at Fresenius Medical Care

Purpose and Scope

Supports FMCNA's mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy. Adheres to the FMCNA Compliance Program, including all regulatory and FMS policy requirements. Performs duties as part of the hemodialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, training, and regulations set forth by corporate, state, and federal agencies.

Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Supports the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvement initiatives.

Float Role

Same responsibilities as above, with flexibility to cover multiple locations as needed.

Duties / Activities Customer Service
  • Builds a FMS culture through values and customer service standards.
  • Provides outstanding service to all external and internal customers.
  • Maintains effective relationships through timely communication.
  • Takes initiative to resolve customer service issues promptly.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties – Patient Care
  • Assist other health care members in providing detailed patient education (e.g., adequacy measures, OLC, AMP, UKM, disease process).
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their well‑being since last treatment; report complaints or observations to the nurse supervisor.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and report findings.
  • Obtain necessary pre‑ and post‑treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and report difficulties.
  • Administer Heparin as delegated or as allowed by state law.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, setting QB and QD.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide interventions as per physician orders.
  • Monitor patient response to dialysis and report findings.
  • Document all pre‑ and post‑dialysis evaluations, vital signs, and weight.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming parameters (UF goal, treatment time, Na modeling, UF modeling).
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, including NVL 160.
  • Record vital signs and treatment parameters accurately on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Provide accurate documentation, including progress notes when applicable.
  • Observe patient safety, conduct machine checks, and report changes.
  • Manage vascular access and appropriate interventions during treatment.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and prepare specimens.
Maintenance / Technical
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics; ensure all areas are safe and clean.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments.
  • Prepare for dialysis treatment and document tasks as needed.
  • Perform pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing (PHT).
  • Initiate the Solution Delivery System (SDS).
  • Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant.
  • Organize supplies efficiently to prevent waste.
Clerical & Administrative
  • Document ongoing participation in CQI activities.
  • Enter all treatment data into the clinical application accurately and timely.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness; correct omissions.
  • Prepare initial patient chart for admission.
  • Prepare lab requisitions for prescribed or stat specimens.
  • Label, prepare, and store lab samples per specifications.
  • Coordinate lab specimen collection via courier.
Other
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Addendum for Patient Care Technicians Working in the Home Programs (not Home Assist)
  • Assist HT RN on Home Visit as directed.
  • Reinforce PD/HHD education under supervision of qualified HT RN.
  • Schedule and contact patients for appointments.
  • Weigh patient and obtain vital signs.
  • Collect treatment records, review for completion, and notify RN of incomplete/missing records.
  • Clean and prep treatment room; prep charts.
  • Prepare lab tubes and requisitions; assist with phlebotomy (PCT certified) or state regulations.
