Job Summary
Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at the Brenham Clinic. The Technician will document patient histories, perform preliminary ocular examinations, and maintain patient flow while communicating appointment status to patients and Clinic Managers.
Candidates must be able to travel to other clinics as needed and support clinic hours Monday through Friday, 6:30 am–6:30 pm. Weekend hours may be available based on schedule.
Responsibilities- Obtain comprehensive patient history – chief complaint, present illness, family history, allergies, medications.
- Perform and document visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, motility, pupillary function tests, dilation, and ocular tonometry.
- Provide compassionate patient care throughout clinic flow.
- Conduct opening and closing duties: inventory count, drug prep, sterilization of instruments.
- Maintain cleanliness and supply stock in exam and procedure rooms.
- Support the ophthalmic photographer in OCT procedures.
- Contact patients who missed appointments and reschedule as needed.
- Manage smooth patient flow to the physician, adjusting test sequence as required.
- Troubleshoot equipment (projector, tonopen, autoclave).
- Assist with laser procedures, injections, and minor surgeries when called upon.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform comprehensive work‑ups.
- Educate patients on eye‑drop instillation and post‑treatment instructions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organization, attention to detail, and multitasking ability.
- Team‑player mindset.
- Proficient with multiple computer systems.
- Knowledge of HIPAA requirements.
- High‑school diploma required; some college preferred.
- One to two years of ophthalmic assistant experience preferred.
- Certification as an ophthalmic assistant preferred.
- Valid CPR certification required.
- Ability to frequently stand, sit, and move between exam rooms during clinic sessions.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to type and write legibly in a dimly‑lit setting.
- Ability to hear softly spoken words.
- Ability to support patients getting in and out of exam chairs.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
