Key Responsibilities- Provide highly complex vocational nursing care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or behaviorally challenging.
- Administer medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally, or by injection, and perform complex technical nursing procedures such as tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound care, and breathing treatments.
- Collect specimens for laboratory examination and conduct screening tests as requested by lab personnel.
- Monitor vital signs, weight, diet, and feeding; observe and document post-treatment status.
- Instruct direct support professionals and other staff on how to monitor individuals after a procedures and provide patient education.
- Assist Registered Nurses (RNs) and other medical staff in implementing protocols, procedures, and programs to improve overall health and safety.
- Respond to emergency situations and follow safety and infection control procedures.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration, communicating pertinent information orally and in writing.
- Perform other duties as assigned, such as working in the clinic or lab, assisting with patient scheduling, or accompanying individuals off site for activities or appointments that require nursing attendance.
- Provide treatment to HHS employees injured within the scope of employment.
- Participate in disaster response and continuity of operations activations as required.
- Attend work regularly and may be required to work a rotating shift schedule, extended shift, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
- Serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required.
- Administer medications and treatments by injection, assist other medical staff, make rounds, and perform complex technical procedures.
- Train and instruct new LVN staff and serve as a resource/mentor for new LVNs.
- Assist RNs with implementation of protocols and quality assurance programs.
- Communicate and collaborate with RN case managers and other team members.
- Respond to emergency situations and ensure safety of individuals.
- Perform other duties as assigned, such as working in the clinic or lab and assisting with patient scheduling.
- Knowledge of nursing care standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures, CPR, and ability to assess and care for residents and staff in emergency situations.
- Skilled in using reasoning to identify problems and consider appropriate resolution.
- Skill in operating computers and applicable software.
- Skill in the care and treatment of patients.
- Ability to provide patient care to a wide variety of individuals with complex medical, mental health, and/or behavioral health issues.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records and use an electronic health record system.
- Ability to communicate effectively and instruct others.
- Ability to interact appropriately with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, their family members, and staff members.
- Must maintain current CPR certification and have the strength and flexibility to safely perform CPR.
Licensed to practice as a licensed vocational nurse in the state of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Or issued a temporary permit to perform supervised nursing duties while awaiting licensure.
Initial Screening Criteria- Graduation from an LVN program.
- Prior employment experience as an LVN is preferred.
- Experience working or volunteering directly with persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities is preferred.
