Job Description & How to Apply Below

Do you enjoy working outdoors, have a practical eye for detail, and like solving problems on site as they arise? Would you like to play a direct role in shaping how new roads and streets are delivered as part of development across Bridgend County Borough?

An opportunity has arisen for a Highways Development Inspector to join the Highways Development team within the Strategic Transportation service at Bridgend County Borough Council. This role sits at the frontline of development delivery, helping to ensure that new highway infrastructure is constructed to the correct standard and is suitable for eventual adoption as highway maintainable at public expense.

The role involves inspecting highway construction works on new private developments, including new roads, footways, drainage and associated infrastructure, as well as alterations to the existing highway network. You will undertake regular site visits, check compliance with approved drawings and agreements, and work closely with developers, contractors and colleagues to resolve issues in a practical and proportionate way. Where required, and subject to workload, the role may also involve assisting the Highways Development Control section with site visits to support the assessment of development proposals.

You will be part of a supportive and experienced highways development team, reporting into the Senior Highways Development Officer in the first instance. While the role requires a high degree of independence and confidence working on your own initiative, you will be supported by colleagues and play an important role in feeding back site issues, progress and risks both verbally and in writing.

This role would suit someone with experience in highway construction or maintenance who enjoys being site-based, working with people, and taking pride in delivering infrastructure that is safe, durable and fit for purpose. Strong communication and negotiation skills are important, along with a constructive approach to problem‑solving.

The successful applicant will be required to hold a full driving licence and have access to a motor vehicle for use on official duties, as the role involves regular travel to development sites across the county borough and to the main council Civic offices in Bridgend.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact:
