The Highway Network Department, within the Communities Directorate, are seeking a Coal Tip Engineer to oversee the development Coal Tip Asset Management Plans and play a guiding and pivotal role in maintaining the Council’s Coal Tip legacy. The successful candidate will assist in the delivery of the Authority’s role and responsibilities in relation to The Disused Mine and Quarry Tips (Wales) Act 2025.

You will be part of a newly created team within the Authority for a 3 year fixed term, to oversee, Coal Tip Maintenance throughout the County Borough

The role will require an understanding of the maintenance practices available to maintain coal tips, structures and drainage features, and will include:

  • Develop and review maintenance plans for Bridgend County Borough Councils Disused Mines and Quarry Tip land holdings
  • To review and assess, and where required provide advice, on maintenance plans for Disused Mine and Quarry Tips held by private landowners within the Boundaries of Bridgend County Borough Council
  • Preparing, collating, and reporting of the Disused Mine and Quarry Tips maintenance inspections undertaken by BCBC staff and others
  • Identify and prepare schedules of works for coal tip maintenance schemes and monitor and report on their progress to senior management teams.
  • Provide cost estimates for works to Disused Mine and Quarry Tips, to create funding bids to Welsh Government or internally to secure funding for remedial works
  • Attend meetings and represent Bridgend County Borough Council at national level to provide a local authority response to the maintenance of Disused Mine and Quarry Tips.
  • Manage and control BCBC land assets, including Disused Mine and Quarry Tips, assigned to Highways Network Management Team.

The applicant must have experience or knowledge in undertaking the specific duties identified in this pack. Must be able to work well as part of a team and communicate effectively with colleagues, external companies and members of the public.

A valid driving licence is requirement for this post.
