Responsibilities- Gathers information to design Recreation programs that meet the functional levels, needs and interests of each resident.
- Develops and provides individual and group activities for residents that reflect interests, are offered at hours convenient to residents (morning, afternoon, evening, weekend), and take place in a variety of locations, including seasonal events.
- Develops and implements effective procedures to inform all residents of upcoming activities.
- Develops and updates Recreation Services policies and procedures reflecting the facility7s philosophy and mission.
- Participates in budget development and provides relevant financial information to the Administrator regarding department needs and status.
- Hires and retains qualified staff to provide recreation services; conducts interviews, provides performance reviews, and ensures staff meet qualifications and can perform all essential functions.
- Maintains current skills and knowledge through continuing education and applies it to job responsibilities.
- Participates in fire and disaster drills and carries out assigned duties in emergencies to assure resident safety.
- Plans and organizes recreational activities including: monthly activities calendar, News & Views newsletter, entertainment scheduling, outings, and activity calendars for the activity assistant.
- Encourages resident participation in activities and checks on residents as requested with daily follow-up.
- Schedules regular shopping trips, grocery shopping, and other community outings; organizes two travel trips per year and annual events.
- Supervises Activity Assistant and Fitness Instructor; oversees librarian services and other program supports as needed.
- Provides activities to promote socialization (e.g., puzzles, bingo, celebrations, entertainment) and coordinates resources (supplies, snacks, etc.).
- Acts as librarian between Whitaker Glen and Wake County Library.
Minimum two (2) years college education with courses in recreation, education, social work, other behavioral sciences or clinical services.
Minimum Experience RequiredTwo (2) years’ experience in a social or recreational program within the past five years, with one (1) year full-time employment in a resident activities program in a long-term health care setting; or one (1) year in a supervisory role within a recreation program.
MinimumLicensure/Certification Required By Law
Eligible for certification as therapeutic Recreation Specialist or as an Activities professional by a recognized accrediting body.
Additional Qualifications (Preferred)Qualified as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant, or satisfactory.
