- Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation in various healthcare/medical settings for patients, companions, and visitors both in-person and virtually.
- Observe interpreter standards of practice such as maintaining professional boundaries, respecting patients' rights, and remaining neutral while supporting the patient-provider relationship.
- Serve as a cultural and linguistic resource for hospital staff and patients.
- Understand and adopt the different roles of interpreters (conduit, clarifier, cultural broker, advocate) as appropriate.
- Use discretion when discussing confidential issues. Apply knowledge of ethics and standards of community interpreting to real situations in the healthcare environment.
- Utilize exceptional customer service skills and demonstrate cultural competence when interacting with all customers, patients, visitors, and colleagues.
- Ability to work flexible hours and drive to multiple locations across Hartford Healthcare to provide interpreter services as needed.
- Completion of an accredited interpreter training program, or equivalent. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- 2-3 years’ experience interpreting American Sign Language.
- Tactile interpretation skills preferred.
- Certification by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID): CI, CT, CSC, NIC Certified, or National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level V.
- Registered with the State of Connecticut Interpreter Registry.
- Valid driver’s license.
