The assignment of the School Nurse is for the purpose/s of maintaining a health services program for the assessment, evaluation, maintenance and improvement of the health of students. Gives professional nursing care to students and performs related nursing services such as:
Responsibilities
- Administers basic health care and first aid for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
- Assesses and evaluates the health and development status of pupils for the purpose of identifying physical disorders and other factors affecting the learning process, communicating with the primary care provider, and contributing significant information in order to modify the pupil’s individualized education/health plan.
- Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information and complying with legal requirements.
- Performs student health screenings (vision, scoliosis, immunization review) with appropriate referrals and follow-up; health problems or special needs, for the purpose of ensuring compliance with government mandated requirements.
- Monitors student immunization compliance by reviewing immunization records of every student and takes corrective actions to comply with state mandated immunization compliance policies and provides information required for intra-district transfer of records as required.
- Monitors all student medications administered at the school level as prescribed by a physician for the purpose of ensuring compliance with state law.
- Maintains a daily log of medication administered.
- Responds to medical emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns.
- Other duties as assigned and consistent with the School Health Nurse job description.
- Active State of Connecticut registered nurse license.
- Thorough knowledge of nursing principles and interventions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of child-development, age-related health risk factors, chronic and acute health conditions.
- Emergency first aid skills and current CPR/AED certification.
- Well defined oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to provide consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to travel between and among schools during the workday.
- Computer proficiency and the ability to submit reports as required.
- This position is in accordance with the Agreement between the City of Bridgeport and Connecticut Association of Labor Unions (CALU). The salary will follow the contract and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
