  • Assist cardiothoracic surgeons in the operating room, including first assisting in CABG, valve, and thoracic procedures.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative patient management, including rounds, progress notes, and discharge planning.
  • Perform bedside procedures such as chest tube insertion, line placement, and wound management as needed.
  • Previous experience in cardiothoracic surgery is required; must demonstrate strong clinical and technical skills in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Care:
    The Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs as part of an interdisciplinary team. In inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient settings, the NP/PA delivers optimal patient care from diagnostic to prognostic matters, collaborates with the attending physician(s) per state law, hospital policy, protocols, and clinical pathways, and may provide autonomous team-based care.

    They obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, review orders and tests, formulate and manage treatment plans, may perform procedures, prescribe treatments and medications as allowed by guidelines, and may have autonomous practice in certain specialty areas. They may function as first or second assistant on operative cases within scope and prerequisites.
  • Patient Education & Psychosocial Support:
    Educate patients/families on care and resources; collaborate with supervising/collaborating MD to include admission instructions, treatment plans, potential side effects, and discharge planning. Provide psychosocial support as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Information Management:
    Ensure appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protect information across all media from unauthorized access, modification, destruction, or disclosure.
  • Quality Management:
    Demonstrate professional ethics and commitment to patient care; ensure compliance with patient-related regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
  • Professional Development:
    Engage in projects to maintain and advance professional competency; serve as a clinical resource and preceptor where appropriate; participate in safety reporting and quality improvement efforts; may collaborate on research and protocol development.
