Purpose of Job Class

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air‑conditioning, and refrigeration equipment and systems.

Examples of Duties
  • Perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard HVACR trade practices and codes
  • Operate, maintain, repair, install, modify and assemble air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems
  • Determine required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas
  • Use and interpret a psychometric chart
  • Control and measure airflow, room air changes and room pressurizing
  • Monitor computerized control systems
  • Perform minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks
  • Add water treatment chemicals to boilers
  • Estimate time, personnel and procure required materials
  • Keep necessary records
  • Serve as sole worker in smaller trade areas when needed
  • Assist with electrical or pneumatic controls for this type of equipment
  • Inspect and repair steam traps fed by main system at various locations
  • Remove pipe insulation materials using OSHA approved methods
  • Act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts
  • Operate heavy equipment as required
  • Respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state‑owned airports
  • Perform related duties as required
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  • Considerable knowledge of standard HVACR trade practices and tools
  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records
  • Ability to utilize computer software
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade.

Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience

Two (2) of the general experience years must have been performing skilled HVACR trades.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in a maintenance trade area may substitute for two (2) years of general experience
  • Completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may substitute for the general and special experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may substitute for the general and special experience
  • Experience on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis
Preferred Qualifications
  • Holder of S2 License and/or D2 or higher license
  • Experience with chiller operation or cooling towers
  • Experience with commercial HVAC systems
  • Experience with building management systems
Special Requirements
  • University of Connecticut incumbents must possess and retain a State of Connecticut heating, piping, and/or cooling license
  • Incumbents may be required to acquire and retain current licenses, permits, and/or certifications as determined by the appointing authority
Physical Requirements
  • Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility and visual and auditory acuity to perform duties
  • May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles
  • Physical examination may be required
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to risk of injury from equipment and extreme weather conditions
  • Requires completion of hazardous materials training programs (e.g., asbestos, PCB, PFAS) in line with EPA guidelines
  • Use of respirators and safety goggles may be required
