All travelers must take and pass a cardiac rhythm exam. An RN with ACLS certification should be able to pass the exam. Nurses must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips.

Description:
The position involves working in a Med Surg/Telemetry Float Pool. Floating to multiple units, primarily to 6N and 7N, along with other units as needed. Patient ratios mainly range from 1:5 to 1:6 for both day and night shifts. Occasionally, there could be a maximum of 7 patients towards the end of a shift depending on patient acuity. Common diagnoses include congestive heart failure, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, and orthopedic issues, among others.
The unit utilizes CPAP and BiPap for respiratory support. Respiratory therapy manages the respiratory equipment; nurses do not manage these devices directly. All units have charge nurses, with day charge nurses not taking patient assignments while night charge nurses may take patients. Patient care assistants and nursing aides are part of the team on each unit, assisting with basic care tasks.
Travelers are required to work every other weekend, with shifts typically occurring every Saturday and Sunday. Work may include participation in the holiday rotation schedule. Travelers typically float among various units but will usually be assigned a 'parent unit' for easier management. Scrub color for nurses is royal blue. A maximum patient load is maintained when floating to ensure effective care.
Nurses will remain within their scope of practice during assignments, caring for basic telemetry patients. Unit orientation for travelers typically includes 1-2 shifts with a preceptor to ensure a smooth transition into the role.
