Job DescriptionThe Mechanical Engineer focuses on the design and engineering of HVAC and mechanical utilities for buildings. The individual possesses demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex tasks, coordinate with internal and external parties, establish priorities and direct the work of others. Typical tasks and deliverables: site selection, master planning, commissioning and startup, load calculations, utility assessments, energy modeling, design reports, code evaluations, plans, P&IDs, schedules, HAZOP reviews, installation details, equipment and system selection and specification, and coordination with manufacturers and trade partners.
Project work includes directing design activities for all levels of design such as studies, conceptual and schematic design, design development, construction documentation and construction administration. The Mechanical Engineer V understands the development and field implementation of documents through all project phases, sizes and levels of complexity. Within this role there are multiple positions, and their focuses are described below.
The Senior Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing oversight for the discipline at a project, office and regional level. The Senior Lead oversees the Mechanical discipline scope of work and manages the discipline budget on all project phases, sizes and levels of complexity, and directs and manages the workflows and execution of design and engineering support staff (Entry-Level to Senior) to meet client expectations and project goals.
The Senior Lead Engineer may work independently or at the direction of the Project Manager.
- Direct and manage the workflows and execution of design and engineering support staff.
- Coordinate with internal and external parties, manage multiple complex tasks, establish priorities and direct the work of others.
- Work with a Project Manager on proposal development, design task identification, man-hour planning and project scheduling for the discipline scope of work on advanced level projects.
- Identify and resolve advanced non-compliant existing conditions during site walks and construction field surveys.
- Attend external seminars/conferences for professional development.
- Develop advanced internal mechanical design and engineering training presentations.
- Develop narratives, reports and construction drawing packages and write construction specifications on advanced and complex projects without oversight.
- Provide lead and advanced support of construction activities such as RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch list development and construction progress reports.
- Conduct technical and leadership interviews.
- Conduct quality checking of documents for advanced complex projects and drive overall project quality.
- Provide mentorship to less experienced Mechanical Engineers and/or Designers.
- Lead advanced project system design programming and master planning with minimal or no support from Senior Engineer.
- Lead a team of mechanical staff in the execution of advanced projects discipline design and engineering.
- Provide oversight and technical leadership to other offices and related functions such as Business Development, Technical Advancement and Vertical Markets.
- Provide industry-level perspective and guidance to frame business strategy in the face of evolving technology or client buying behavior.
Minimum Qualifications
- ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (with a mechanical focus)
- Minimum of 15 years of experience for Senior Lead position
- Minimum of 20 years of experience for SME position
- Professional Engineer registration in good standing
- Expert experience with performing engineering calculations, and developing and implementing HVAC, mechanical utility and piping systems designs
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Advanced experience with using and applying the mechanical/plumbing/fire/building codes
- Advanced experience using and applying applicable industry standards (ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, OSHA, etc.)
- Advanced experience conducting and leading field surveys of existing conditions and support of field reporting
- Proficiency in Revit
- Life Sciences (Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Laboratory) or Food & Beverage industry experience
