Overview

Lewis Services, the second‑largest utility vegetation management company in North America, is hiring a Crew Leader with CDL – Arborist to oversee daily tree crew operations, ensuring safe and efficient tree trimming and line clearing for utilities and other customers. The position requires strong leadership, excellent knowledge of arboricultural safety standards, and the ability to maintain high quality and safety on job sites.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily tree crew operations and enforce safety and quality practices.
  • Plan, assign, and monitor tasks based on crew skills and job requirements.
  • Provide training, onboarding, coaching, discipline, and performance evaluation.
  • Maintain contact information for crew members and report fitness‑for‑duty concerns.
  • Conduct field training, job briefings, and safety enforcement.
  • Identify hazards, implement safeguards, and make work‑slowdown decisions due to weather or safety concerns.
  • Operate and oversee equipment including trucks, chippers, aerial lifts, and power saws.
  • Interpret work orders, utility drawings, and line voltage symbols.
  • Maintain clean work vehicles and job sites and communicate with property owners for access and permissions.
  • Promote positive relationships with customers, public, utility representatives, and contractors.
  • Cooperate with emergency services when blocking streets or driveways.
  • Maintain accurate records of crew performance, incidents, equipment issues, and completed work.
  • Investigate incident reports and conduct incident response as assigned.
  • Control crew costs through efficient resource use and equipment use.
  • Stay informed on company policies, union agreements, and equipment standards.
  • Respond to emergency situations, eliminate hazards, and assist in service restoration.
  • Request major tool or equipment repairs as needed.
  • Travel frequently, including overnight stays, as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of experience in a tree crew or utility vegetation management.
  • Strong knowledge of ANSI Z133 Safety Requirements and A300 Pruning Standards for arboricultural operations.
  • Proficiency in identifying poisonous plants and interpreting electrical circuit basics.
  • Advanced tree ascent/descent using ropes and safety saddle, and skilled in aerial lift operations.
  • Completion or ability to complete Crew Leader Technical Knowledge and Skills Certification.
  • Valid CDL and required medical certification.
  • Training and licenses for safe use of herbicides.
  • CPR and First Aid certified (provided by Lewis).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision‑making skills.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state, local, and federal regulations.
Physical Demands
  • Lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height or higher.
  • Push or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Walk or hike up to one mile on uneven terrain.
  • Endure extreme climate variances.
  • Operate two‑handed tools and equipment.
  • Maintain skill in tree ascent and descent at heights during adverse weather.

  • Blowers, pruners, rakes, winches, ropes.
  • Climbing gear: harness, chaps, spikes, hanger puller, manual and hydraulic pole saw, spikes.
  • Sprayer applicators, pump sprayer, herbicide applicators, fuel, cones, signs.
  • Tablets and communication devices.
