Project BackgroundA major global battery manufacturing organisation is constructing a state-of-the-art gigaplant at the Gravity Smart Campus near Bridgwater, Somerset. The site, formerly known as ROF 37, is being developed into a leading hub for advanced manufacturing, clean technology, and sustainable energy innovation. This landmark development represents an approximate £4 billion investment, targeting 40 GWh annual battery production capacity and supporting the UK’s transition to electrification.
The facility is expected to create up to 4,000 high‑skilled jobs, with significant wider supply chain impact. Construction is underway, with production expected to begin in the mid‑2020s. The project is strategically significant, aiming to supply a major share of the UK’s automotive battery cell demand by the early 2030s.
Our client is seeking an experienced Mechanical Project Manager to represent their interests throughout the construction and installation of mechanical and building services systems at this major industrial site. Acting as the client’s on‑site representative, you will oversee all mechanical works, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant delivery to high standards of quality, performance, and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities- Represent the client on-site, ensuring mechanical works align with design intent, project objectives, and safety standards
- Monitor daily construction activities, progress, and contractor performance
- Coordinate with project management, engineering, and quality teams to maintain alignment on priorities and scope
- Oversee installation of mechanical systems including HVAC, chilled water, compressed air, process utilities, and fire protection
- Review mechanical design drawings, specifications, and installation methodologies
- Ensure compliance with UK building regulations, fire safety standards, and relevant international codes
- Conduct inspections and verify installation quality against approved standards and specifications
- Promote health, safety, and environmental best practices across all mechanical works
- Identify, track, and manage corrective actions for non‑conformances
- Interface with contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers to resolve technical or logistical issues
- Review and validate contractor progress claims, schedules, and technical submissions
- Support coordination with electrical, civil, and process engineering teams to manage interfaces
- Prepare regular site reports highlighting progress, risks, issues, and mitigation plans
- Maintain accurate documentation including inspections, approvals, and site communications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related discipline
- 8–10 years experience in large‑scale industrial, manufacturing, or process plant construction projects
- Proven background in managing HVAC, process utilities, or mechanical systems from design through installation and commissioning
- Experience in gigafactory, automotive, pharmaceutical, or high‑technology projects desirable
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, installation standards, and commissioning procedures
- Excellent leadership, communication, and contractor management skills
- Ability to represent client interests and oversee multiple contractors professionally
- Proficient with MS Project or similar project management tools
- CSCS / SMSTS or equivalent safety management certification preferred
