Wood Commissioning is recruiting for an Industrial Safety Advisor who will support EDF with the development and delivery of the industrial safety arrangements for the Hinkley Point C (HPC) operational site. Ideally based locally to the Bridgwater area, the successful candidate will be engaged on a 12 month rolling PAYE contract and work Monday to Friday on a hybrid basis, comprising a minimum 4 days a week in office / onsite at HPC, Bridgwater, Satellite offices.

The Role

The Industrial Safety Advisor will help establish and promote the safety culture for the commissioning phase of HPC. The position also includes liaison with the construction safety teams to ensure a smooth transition from construction to operational industrial safety arrangements.

Hinkley Point C (HPC) is a major infrastructure project encompassing the design, construction and commissioning of two European Pressure Reactors (EPR’s) in the South-West of England. The Project is of significant importance to the UK’s future energy requirements, being the first to be built in the UK for over 25 years and is designed to operate for 60 years. When in operation it will deliver circa 3,260MW of secure low carbon energy to the UK energy network, which is enough energy to power approximately 6 million UK homes.

The Project also represents a significant investment in the UK nuclear industry and the related technical supply chains. Hinkley Point C is a vital part of the UK’s future energy strategy. As the first of the UK’s next generation of Nuclear power stations, HPC is both of high profile and high complexity. The HPC Commissioning Team is expanding in preparation for the commissioning of Hinkley Point C, the first nuclear power station to be built in a generation.

Responsibilities
  • Developing industrial safety management system processes comprising the Comm Ops Industrial Safety Management System (ISMS)
  • Participating in the development of the industrial safety training programme comprising of topic specific training
  • Providing subject matter input to the training team to ensure that the organisation for the operational site is adequately trained on fire protection topics and processes
  • Developing and maintaining an effective collaborative working relationship with the HPC construction site and Nuclear Generation industrial safety teams
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of emergency preparedness and response arrangements
  • Coordinating the delivery of statutory assessments with cross functional input from relevant teams
  • Support the creation of an industrial safety culture for the Comm Ops Organisation
Qualifications
  • Degree / Masters in a science related topic
  • Previous experience in OH&S Management with responsibility for developing, implementing and maintaining safety management systems within an industrial or similar setting
  • Detailed understanding of OH&S Safety Legislation e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA), Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR), Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and codes of practice, as well as the ability to interpret applicability to a range of different operating conditions and contexts
  • Hold an appropriate qualification e.g., H&S Diploma (NEBOSH) and current membership of IOSH
  • Experience carrying out and reviewing Risk Assessment (RAs) within a range of different operating environments
  • Ability to communicate clearly at all levels of the organisation both verbally and through written reports
  • Experience with ISO
    45001
