About the OpportunitySpencer Ogden is supporting a major UK infrastructure project in the recruitment of an experienced Fire Safety Engineer to join a high‑performing site‑based safety team.
This is a critical role within a complex, multi‑contractor construction environment, providing specialist fire safety engineering expertise during the construction and commissioning phases.
The RoleThe Fire Safety Engineer will report to the Head of Site Environment, Fire Safety, Radiation Protection & Harbours and will be responsible for developing and implementing fire safety strategy, standards, and guidance across the project.
Key Responsibilities- Determining and documenting construction fire safety strategies
- Developing project‑specific fire safety standards and management systems
- Recommending and reviewing temporary fire safety solutions, including:
- Temporary compartmentation
- Smoke control systems
- Fire barriers
- Fire water supplies
- Fire detection and alarm systems
- Reviewing contractor submissions as an informed client
- Advising Construction Leads and Project Managers on fire engineering strategy
- Supporting building fire engineering strategy development
- Leading or supporting fire incident investigations, including fire scene investigations
- Liaising with Regulators and Local Fire Authorities to ensure compliance
- Promoting a positive fire safety culture across a large contractor workforce
- Supporting continual improvement of fire safety arrangements and systems
- Demonstrable experience in fire safety within complex, multi‑interface construction environments
- Strong understanding of UK fire safety legislation, standards and the ALARP principle
- Knowledge of BS 5839, BS 5266 and BS 9999
- Working knowledge of construction fire safety management
- Understanding of process fire risk during construction and commissioning
- Awareness of DSEAR implications
- Strong report writing and communication skills
- Ability to analyse complex fire safety challenges and implement practical solutions
- Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (or equivalent fire safety qualifications and experience)
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. Institute of Fire Engineers)
- Regulatory enforcement experience
- Long‑term contract on a nationally significant infrastructure programme
- High‑impact role within a complex, large‑scale construction environment
- Competitive inside IR35 day rate
