Mechanical Engineer
Major Tidal Barrier & Heavy Civil Engineering Project | Bridgwater Area

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join a major infrastructure scheme near Bridgwater, supporting the delivery of a large tidal barrier and associated works.

With the overall project scheduled to continue through to early 2029, this represents a genuinely long-term opportunity for a contractor looking for continuity on a substantial engineering programme. Multiple work packages will progress across the scheme, providing plenty of technical variety as the project develops. For a contractor looking for a longer-term assignment, this provides the opportunity to work on a technically complex scheme with multiple packages progressing across the site.

The position will suit someone with experience delivering mechanical works on major infrastructure, water, wastewater or similarly complex engineering projects.

The Project

This is a substantial heavy civil engineering development incorporating a large tidal barrier alongside a range of associated infrastructure.

The wider scheme includes:

Major tidal barrier works
Mechanical equipment and associated systems
Associated civil and structural works  The mechanical package will form an important part of the successful operation of the barrier, requiring close coordination between mechanical, civil and other engineering disciplines.

The Role

As Mechanical Engineer, you’ll support the planning, coordination and delivery of the mechanical elements of the tidal barrier, working alongside the wider project and engineering teams.

Key responsibilities will include:

Coordinating mechanical works across the project
Reviewing drawings, specifications and technical documentation
Supporting the installation and delivery of mechanical equipment and systems
Monitoring works to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality requirements
Working closely with civil, structural and other engineering disciplines
Liaising with subcontractors, suppliers and key project stakeholders
Supporting inspections, testing and commissioning activities
Identifying and resolving technical issues during delivery
Monitoring progress against programme requirements
Maintaining appropriate engineering, quality and project records
Contributing to project meetings and progress reporting
Ensuring works are delivered in accordance with relevant health & safety requirements  About You

We’re looking for a Mechanical Engineer with experience working on technically demanding engineering or infrastructure projects.
Previous tidal barrier experience would be highly relevant, although experience gained within water and wastewater treatment environments would also transfer well to this position.

Suitable backgrounds could include:

Tidal barriers, flood defence or water-control infrastructure
Water treatment plants
Wastewater and sewage treatment works
Pumping stations and associated mechanical systems
Major infrastructure or heavy engineering projects
Large mechanical installation packages  You’ll also need:

A relevant Mechanical Engineering qualification, degree or equivalent
Proven experience delivering mechanical engineering works within a project environment
Good understanding of mechanical installation, testing and commissioning
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical information
Strong coordination, communication and organisational skills
Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary project teams
Ability to commute to the Bridgwater area
Full UK driving licence
Right to live and work in the UK  Rate & Package
£475 – £500 per day including holiday pay, depending on experience
Long-term contract supporting a major tidal barrier project
All necessary site equipment provided
Potential for continuity across further phases of the wider scheme

Why This Role?

For a Mechanical Engineer with a background in water infrastructure, heavy engineering or major mechanical installations, this is an opportunity to bring that experience onto a significant tidal barrier project and play a key role in delivering its mechanical systems
