Kirklees Council are advertising this role on behalf of Newsome Academy.
OverviewTo prepare meals and manage kitchen staff.
Core Purpose- Prepare all meals and ensure compliance with safe and hygienic kitchen operation regulations.
- Manage Kitchen Assistants to deliver smooth and efficient food service.
- Ensure compliance with guidelines and standards.
- Order goods, complete paperwork, and maintain accurate records.
- Responsible for preparation and production of all meals, including vegetables, salads, fruit, sweet and savoury sauces, milk, puddings, cakes, pastries, sandwiches, and cooking them if appropriate.
- Run the food service to serve children and staff.
- Cater for special dietary needs and be aware of students with any allergies.
- Adhere to and maintain all relevant Food Hygiene and Health and Safety legislation required by law.
- Liaise with the head/teachers regarding themed days and calendar events.
- Manage and organise Kitchen Assistants, giving clear instructions to provide an outstanding food service.
- Perform performance management with Kitchen Assistants and identify training needs.
- Accurately manage stock levels, maintain records and procedures (e.g., fridge & freezer temperature record).
- Ensure staff are trained on using kitchen equipment.
- Ensure that all equipment is in full working order and meets all Health and Safety requirements.
- Manage the delivery of an effective, high‑quality catering service for the Academy, ensuring a smooth and timely service.
- Encourage and promote students to eat a variety of different dishes.
- Observe Health and Safety good practice to maintain safety for staff and students.
- Observe food hygiene regulations to prevent contamination and ensure food is safe to eat.
- Assist in set‑up and clear dining/service area when required.
- Accommodate catering requirements for special functions (e.g., Open Days).
- Supply catering to other schools in the trust.
- Keep all work areas and surfaces clean and tidy at all times, including at the end of the day/shift.
- Perform kitchen cleaning and tidying, including non‑term deep cleans.
- Ensure all items are washed up and tidied away accordingly.
- Wash towels, cloths and other items as required.
- Ensure security of stores during working hours.
- Report and, where possible, take action on compliments or complaints.
- Report and, where possible, take action on incidents, fire, loss, theft, damage, unfit food, and other irregularities.
- Attend meetings and training courses.
- Carry out any reasonable requests by management/supervisor.
- Uphold and practise safeguards to promote the welfare of students in day‑to‑day dealings.
The duties above are neither exclusive nor exhaustive. The post holder may be required by the Headteacher to carry out appropriate duties within the context of the job, skills and grade.
