Director / Head of Civil & Structural Engineering

National multidisciplinary consultancy | UK-wide location flexibility

Package of £100,000 - £120,000

A chance to build a new engineering division from the ground up, with opportunity for equity.

A well-established multidisciplinary built-environment consultancy is broadening its service offering by taking Civil and Structural Engineering Design in-house.

The pipeline is already there. The client base is already there. What’s missing is the Civil & Structural leader to build the division around them.

This is a role for someone who wants autonomy, backing, and a genuine stake in what they build. You’d shape the service, build your own team, and have a clear pathway to becoming a shareholder as the division performs.

The business has offices across the UK, with a strong footprint in the North West and on the South Coast. There’s genuine flexibility on where the successful candidate is based, with travel to projects and other studios as the role requires.

Why this opportunity?
  • A division of your own: Full ownership of establishing and growing an in-house Civil & Structural Engineering capability.
  • A live pipeline from day one: Significant project work already in demand means you’d be delivering, not pitching, from early on.
  • Build the team you want: Recruitment will be an early priority, and you’d shape the hires.
  • A route to shareholding: A credible path toward becoming a shareholder, tied to how the division performs under your leadership.
  • Commercial reach: Shape client relationships, win new work, and influence the wider direction of the consultancy’s engineering offer.
  • Multidisciplinary context: Established Architecture, Project Management, Quantity Surveying and Building Surveying teams to work with on integrated schemes.
  • Varied sector mix: Projects across defence, healthcare, education, commercial and other built-environment work.
  • Backed autonomy: Direct relationships with the business partners, with the resources of a going concern behind you.
  • Flexible UK base: Candidates can be based in a suitable UK location, chosen in discussion with the business to align with your network and the wider team.
About the business

The consultancy operates across the UK, with mature teams in architecture, project management, quantity surveying and building surveying.

With a strong client base and an active project book, the business is now investing in expanding its multidisciplinary offer by establishing in-house MEP, structural and civil engineering functions.

There’s existing work ready to deliver, and the leadership team wants the right senior figure to turn Civil & Structural into a profitable, well-regarded division within the business.

The role

As Director / Head of Civil & Structural Engineering, you’d lead the setup and growth of the C&S function. The role is a blend of strategic leadership, commercial development, project oversight and team-building.

You’d be responsible for:

  • Shaping the Civil & Structural service and setting its growth strategy.
  • Hiring and leading the engineering team, with the first appointments a key early focus.
  • Overseeing project delivery, technical quality and the commercials behind each job.
  • Managing existing client relationships, and identifying where to win new work.
  • Working across disciplines to integrate C&S into the consultancy’s broader offer.
  • Partnering with the directors on long-term direction, including progression toward shareholder status.

This isn’t a technically-focused hands-on design role. It’s a leadership appointment for someone who understands civil and structural engineering deeply enough to steer it, and has the commercial and relationship skills to grow a business around it.

What they’re looking for
  • A senior Civil & Structural Engineering leader at Director, Partner or equivalent level, or a strong Associate Director ready to make the step up.
  • Experience running teams and holding senior client relationships on civil and structural engineering projects.
  • A track record of winning work, developing accounts and contributing to the growth of a business.
  • The ability to build and lead a team, with a clear point of view on what good looks like for a new engineering division.
  • Commercial awareness: project profitability, divisional performance, and how to grow something sustainable.
  • A relevant client and industry network would be an advantage.
