DefinitionPerform a wide variety of maintenance and repairs to gasoline and diesel-powered automotive, light, medium and heavy-duty trucks, various sizes and types of construction and other power-driven and non-powered equipment. This position must work well independently and, most importantly, communicate and work as a team with all Fleet Department and City staff members, providing excellent, supportive and respectful customer service and human relations skills that support the City of Brighton's mission and values.
Supervisionreceived and exercised
Receives general supervision from the Fleet Manager or Fleet Staff Supervisor Designee.
Examples of important/essential responsibilities and dutiesProvides friendly customer service and advice, which may include training in the proper use of mechanical equipment by its operators. Works with the Fleet Manager and fellow employees in scheduling workflow for a smooth and successful Fleet Department operation.
In addition to items of Fleet Mechanic/Technician I, diagnose, adjust, repair or replace electrical components (start/charging system, emergency/non-emergency lighting, various electrical and computer-controlled components).
In addition to items of Fleet Mechanic/Technician I and II, install police and special emergency equipment on new vehicles (light and heavy-duty) before entering service.
May be required to perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QualificationsKnowledge of:
- Operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light to heavy duty vehicles and equipment.
- Operation of internal combustion engines and hydraulically operated equipment.
- Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
- Tools, equipment and procedures used in repair and maintenance of gas and diesel-powered equipment.
- Maintaining an effective working relationship with Fleet Operations Staff, City employees, external customers and vendors.
- Safe working practices, rules and regulations.
