Holy Spirit Parish in Brighton is seeking a full-time Director of Sacred Music and Worship. This position reports directly to the Pastor and will supervise volunteer singers and musicians. The position comes under the ministerial exception and is not subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

General

Summary:

Partnering with the Pastor, the Director of Sacred Music assists in forming a community of Spirit-filled, missionary disciples of Jesus by providing, coordinating and directing song and musical accompaniment for parish liturgies and worship events in conformity with the Church’s instruction, with a preeminent focus on Sunday Masses.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Foster a culture of worship where praising the Lord in song and living a life of whole-hearted devotion are highly valued
  • Deepen the liturgical understanding of the assembly through the choice of songs and occasional, on-going catechesis
  • Help increase regular attendance at liturgies through the quality of music selected and learned by the assembly
  • Select the repertoire for Sunday Masses, school Masses, and other liturgies
  • Recruit, train, and sustain quality cantors and musicians for the parish liturgies
  • Encourage and foster the development of talent, especially younger singers and musicians
  • Participates in planning the liturgies with the pastor and is primarily responsible for all music associated with liturgies:
    Sunday Masses, school Masses, Holy Days of Obligation, funeral Masses, weddings, and other worship events
  • Coordinate the staffing of all liturgies with competent musicians and singers
  • Select and maintain the musical instruments used for the liturgies
  • Attain copyright permission for music
  • Direct the preparation and execution of the electric display of words for songs and some Mass parts during Masses and other worship events
  • Provide liturgical formation, music education, and practical preparations for cantors, choir, musicians, and other groups
  • Keep current on trends in liturgy and music and serve as a resource consultant for parish staff and groups regarding pastoral music
  • Must attend all parish staff meetings
  • Formulate and adhere to an annual music ministry budget
  • Submit the annual music ministry budget to the business manager and finance council
  • Find substitutes to cover Masses while away for vacation, etc.
  • Continue to develop music ministry skills by taking courses/workshops and participating in conferences that are generally related to sacred music and worship music, fostering these talents in others, and the future direction of the parish. The parish will offset the costs of such professional development
  • Meet with the pastor annually for a performance evaluation and goal setting
  • Be a Spirit-filled disciple of Jesus Christ
  • Be committed to growing in holiness through daily prayer and interior conversion.
  • Have a knowledge of Catholic music literature and Catholic teaching on the role of song and music in the liturgy
  • Possess a working knowledge of Catholic Liturgy and Sacraments, especially a familiarity with all parts of the Mass and where music is required
  • Be able to work well with volunteers
  • Enjoy working with others and building a team environment, while staying self-motivated and reaching goals as a leader
  • Be approachable, affable and winsome
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Education

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in music. B.S. in Sacred Music or Liturgical Music preferred.

Experience

Must be able to sing and play the piano and organ. Experience in Catholic sacred music and leading others in worship preferred.

Require

Must complete our safe environment training for the protection of children and youth. Must pass a criminal background check.

Physical Demands

While performing duties, employee has to sit for long periods of time, and use hands in repetitive motion tasks. The position also requires standing, stooping, and bending as needed. Employee is expected to work all liturgical services on weekends and during the week including evenings as needed. The position must be able to lift 40 pounds.
