Overview

POSITION

PURPOSE:

Under general supervision and according to established procedures, conducts noninvasive vascular tests to provide data used by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of arterial and venous disorders. Sets up equipment, gathers pertinent information from patients, explains test procedures, and operates equipment. Observes patients during procedures and alerts supervisor, physicians, and nursing personnel to abnormalities.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities
  • Interviews patients to gather and record pertinent personal and medical information, and performs physical examination of patients.
  • Obtains blood pressure, assesses peripheral pulse by manual palpation and Doppler auscultation, and inspects color, temperature, and overall limb integrity.
  • Explains test procedures to patients and/or family members to allay fears and elicit cooperation. Instructs and/or assists patients in preparing for test procedures.
  • Determines appropriate positioning of patients and equipment to obtain graphic responses; lifts and positions patients according to the diagnostic procedure.
  • Operates specialized equipment including ocular phlethysmograph, carotid phonoangiogram, pulse volume recorder, and impedance plethysmograph to conduct non-invasive vascular tests.
  • Observes patients during procedures and notifies physicians and/or appropriate nursing personnel of any irregularities.
  • Mounts test graphs for physicians’ review, interpretation, and evaluation.
  • Performs minor adjustments to testing equipment and notifies supervisor of serious malfunctions.
Other Functions And Responsibilities
  • Receives requests for procedures and arranges for patient testing by ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are available to perform the requested test.
  • Maintains equipment in clean and proper working order and replenishes supplies as necessary.
  • Performs miscellaneous clerical duties such as answering telephones, scheduling appointments, filing records, and preparing bills.
Required Education, Experience And Certification/Licensure
  • Requires Associate’s Degree in Medical Technology, or completion of an accredited ultrasonography program.
  • 6-12 months related experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of physical sciences including anatomy and physiology as normally acquired through completion of an accredited ultrasound program or allied health program.
  • Approximately 3-6 months on-the-job experience to gain competency in techniques of vascular testing and equipment operation, and to gain knowledge of patient care techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and relay patient information to physicians and nursing personnel.
  • Analytical skills to position patients to obtain best graphic responses and to recognize irregularities and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for approximately 50% of work time when positioning patients, operating equipment, observing patient responses and recording information.
  • Ability to walk and stand for approximately 50% of work time when administering tests, and to lift and position patients and equipment for approximately 10% of work time.
