Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Cashier operates a computerized cash register to effect sales, reconcile cash and registers, and provide outstanding customer service. The position requires accurate handling of currency, checks, and credit card transactions while maintaining a clean, organized cashier area and supporting departmental inventory activities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greets customers, patients, and health system employees with courtesy, providing a remarkable customer experience.
  • Organizes the cashier area, ensuring currency bags are ready and cash register and credit card machines are stocked and functional.
  • Accurately operates a computerized cash register, calculating charges, applying cost exceptions and identifying items by department key.
  • Processes cash, checks, credit cards, and other payment forms, verifying transactions and handling returns or exchanges as required.
  • Assumes accountability for cash management at shift end: verifies register tapes, posts adjustments, and assists with balancing drawers.
  • Ensures the cash drawer maintains an appropriate level of change and obtains additional change when necessary.
  • Maintains food product inventory: orders from approved vendors, monitors levels to maximize turnover, and controls waste.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in the annual inventory process.
  • Trains new staff in cashier responsibilities.
  • Utilizes downtime to assist departmental operations as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient, physician, associate, and visitor information, discussing details only with appropriate personnel in private settings.
  • Conducts conflict resolution constructively, identifying problems, proposing solutions, and participating in their resolution.
  • Bureaucrats hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management, ensuring a safe environment for all.
Education & Experience

High School Diploma or GED preferred (required). Must be able to speak, read, and write English and possess basic math skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to greet, interact, and communicate with customers, patients, and health system employees.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and comprehension of instructions.
  • Ability to perform non‑complex arithmetic and calculations, including receiving cash and providing change.
  • High attention to detail to ensure accuracy.
  • Capacity to multitask, prioritize, and manage frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to stand for up to 80 percent of the work time.
  • Professional demeanor that commands respect and encourages collegiality.

General supervision received from the Service Delivery Leader, Department.
