Environmental Engineer

Position: ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER
Experteer Overview In this role you support the Environment Strategy for Peace Operations, focusing on waste management in field missions. You will liaise with the Environmental Technical Support Unit to guide environmental objectives and budgets, driving sustainable waste solutions. Your work shapes waste infrastructure, training, and reporting to improve mission environmental performance. You will lead cross‑functional collaboration and travel to field missions to implement practical environmental actions.

This position offers an impact role at UNGSC, contributing to mission resilience through sustainable waste practices.

Key Responsibilities Lead the waste working group and implement DOS Environmental Guidelines in missions

Provide technical support on waste management to field missions and align with host country standards

Assist mission budgeting with emphasis on waste management and hazardous waste

Prepare consolidated environmental action reports and identify issues for addressing by mission sections

Review contracts and statements of work for waste‑related engineering projects

Develop and evaluate waste procedures, feasibility studies, and multi‑year waste management plans

Assess existing waste management infrastructure in missions and propose risk‑reducing solutions

Develop training activities to build mission capacity on environmental objectives

Maintain liaison with UN agencies, local authorities, and NGOs in the mission area Travel to field missions up to three months as required

Qualifications

Five years of progressively responsible experience in environmental engineering or related fields

Experience with management of residential or commercial waste streams preferred

Experience in international peacekeeping, post‑conflict environments, field or military operations preferred

Advanced degree in environmental engineering or related field (or first‑level degree with two years' qualifying experience)
