under general direction, the purpose of this position is to perform complex accounting work according to generally accepted standard accounting principles, established procedures, departmental guidelines and regulatory requirements applicable to the work. Employees in this job classification function at journey professional level to accomplish assigned functions according to established schedules, calendars, projects and programs. Work includes researching and collecting data, preparing clear and concise financial reports, and monitoring expenditures and revenues of assigned divisions and/or departments.

  • review information for various funds to verify proper accounting methods are followed and information recorded is accurate.
  • analyze transactions and entries for various accounts, make correcting entries and report changes as appropriate.
  • reconcile bank accounts to the general ledger, prepare various journal entries, prepare budget to actual reports and prepare work papers for supporting documentation.
  • prepare fiscal documentation regarding accounting activities, e.g., weekly, monthly and annual reports.
  • conduct year‑end closing process; provide information to financial auditors; conduct standard internal audits of various accounting records.
  • ensure adherence to generally accepted accounting standards and principles; ensure maintenance of proper audit trails and reconciliation.
  • evaluate receipts, purchase orders, and disbursements for compliance with regulatory standards.
  • perform verification and reconciliation tasks for invoices/receipts/balances according to department procedures.
  • review travel documentation for all city employees to ensure forms are complete, accurate, and consistent with travel policy.
  • perform related duties as assigned.
skills and requirements
  • bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field with at least one (1) year of professional accounting experience, preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • knowledge and proficiency in microsoft office, with higher skill in excel.
  • skilled in data analysis.
  • ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city and state officials, business representatives, and the general public.
  • excellent work history and attendance record.
  • must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
work environment and physical demands
  • general office conditions; exposed to moderate noise levels.
  • sit at a desk and use hand, wrist, and finger movements to operate a computer regularly.
  • talk and listen to other individuals in meetings and over the phone.
  • stand and walk around the office and to other city facilities in order to perform day‑to‑day duties.
  • lift and carry general office supplies and equipment.
