PURPOSE OF

THE ROLE

This role is a 4 month attachment as an Assistant Producer in the BBC Audio Wales and West of England production team based in Bristol.
As an Assistant Producer, you will research, plan and support producers and editors on a wide range of projects. You may act up as producer if required.

The Food, Farming and Factual team is part of the BBC Audio West of England and Wales department. The unit produces hundreds of programmes, mostly for Radio 4, BBC Sounds and the World Service. Our rural affairs and food output runs from Farming Today to the Food Programme via Rare Earth, This Natural Life, Tweet of the Day and many more.

The BBC Food & Farming Awards are also produced by the team. Our factual programmes include the long-running language strand Word of Mouth with Michael Rosen, groundbreaking documentary series (The Patch, Legend), one-off features for Radio 4 and the World Service, and regular reactive features for Radio 4. We have a reputation for storytelling of the highest quality, and for being versatile, creative and collaborative partners with our colleagues across the BBC.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

The successful candidate will be part of the Food, Farming and Factual team. The main responsibility will be the Assistant Producer role on Radio 4’s weekday farming programme Farming Today and the Saturday edition Farming Today This Week. This involves preparing the daily prospects for the programme, monitoring potential news items across the week, and longer‑term planning of interviews and features for the programme.

The successful candidate may also work across the other programmes in our Food, Farming and Factual output. These include The Food Programme, Rare Earth, Open Country, This Natural Life and On Your Farm.

  • You’ll be an excellent researcher with experience of forward planning for programmes and events. You will be a skilled audio editor. You will have the confidence to act up as a producer with the necessary editorial support.
  • You will have a demonstrable interest in rural affairs and experience of working on rural affairs output.
  • You’ll be able to work across different genres of radio production and will know how to work with both established and new presenters to help them deliver their best performance. You’ll have good journalistic skills and experience in producing digital output and social media.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL

EXPERIENCE:

  • You will have a high level of audio production skills.
  • You will have a keen interest in rural affairs and experience of working on rural affairs output.
  • You will be able to manage a range of tasks at the same time, ensuring each is delivered to deadline and on budget.
  • You will have the research skills to develop ideas and identify potential contributors to help build larger audiences for BBC Audio content.
  • You will have experience of working as part of a programme team.
