Company description

Our Media is a leading special‑interest content business, based in the buzzing, creative city of Bristol. We're home to market‑leading brands in craft, cycling, science and nature, homes and music.

We help our audiences pursue their passions through highly trusted, original content – in print, video and online. Our much‑loved brands include BBC Science Focus, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Your Home, Gathered.how, Bike Radar and Cycling Plus.

We also have an award‑winning content agency that works with major charities, brands and membership organisations to help them tell their stories and engage audiences better – in print, video, and online.

Position

We’re looking for a Production Editor to join Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine on a full‑time permanent basis.

Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine is the UK’s leading family history magazine. Associated with the BBC TV series, we cover practical family history content, reader stories and historical features. Our readers are keen family historians who want to add to their family tree while also understanding the world their ancestors lived in. We produce 13 issues a year plus extra content for Apple News.

The ideal candidate will be able to hit the ground running, so prior experience as a production editor or sub-editor is essential. You’ll be able to edit copy so that it is clear, compelling and consistent with eye‑catching headlines, captions and stand‑firsts. You’ll also be a stickler for accuracy, ready to question and check facts.

Working as part of a busy editorial team, you will be highly organised, managing copy flow and commissioning sections of the magazine as well as some writing. The successful candidate will also work with our features editor to help grow our online content. We are looking for someone willing to learn about the world of family history so that they understand what our readers are looking for and can contribute to forward planning meetings.

Responsibilities

Print and digital: You’ll sub‑edit and proofread every page of the magazine, taking in editor and author amends where needed and ensuring deadlines are met. You will also check our digital edition providing any amends to our production team. You’ll also take responsibility for commissioning and managing our three reader stories each month, liaising with readers who submit stories, managing the freelancers who write up the stories and searching for suitable content where necessary.

Apple News: As well as checking the Apple News edition of our print magazine each month, you will be involved with managing additional Apple News content including subbing articles and working with the team to create compelling headlines.

Website: You will support our features editor where necessary with uploading content and creating short news stories and celebrity coverage for our website.

Admin: You will oversee the workflow for both the print magazine and mini mags, creating Trello boards, setting deadlines and attending our weekly Teams production meeting. You will liaise with our freelance Q&A editor to add her commissions to our payment system as well as your own. You will also cover other editorial administration e.g. managing the contributor send‑out list and star letter prizes.
