Consultant Urological Surgeon - General & Endourology

North Bristol NHS Trust seeks a Consultant Urological Surgeon for the Bristol Urological Institute (BUI), a regional centre of excellence delivering urology services across Bristol and Weston.

We are a large, progressive department recognised for excellence in endourology, stone disease, urological cancer care, and functional and reconstructive urology. We support a two-site model across Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital, with access to modern facilities, advanced technology and a strong multidisciplinary team.

You would deliver general urology and endourology, focussing on urinary tract stone disease, including PCNL and complex ureteroscopy, flexible theatre working to support cancer and RTT targets, service development, and participation in consultant on-call rotas across BNSSG.

Main duties of the job

The postholder is eligible for application for a substantive post if they have a CCT or are within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or are listed on the GMC Specialist Register. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.

The postholder is responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when absent.

  • The work of the BUI is now delivered across 2 sites (Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital). You will deliver care on both sites according to your agreed job plan and the need of the service.
  • You will provide general Urology services and endourology/urinary tract stone disease including diagnostic services. Support and mentoring will be provided where required.
  • As part of the division's target to expand theatre usage and improve theatre utilisation, the postholder, with other consultants, will provide flexible theatre cover as part of weekly programmed activities, providing extra capacity to meet cancer and RTT targets.
  • You will contribute to on-call consultant and consultant of the week rota including out of hours cover, including covering multiple sites across BNSSG.
  • The post-holder will, when required, deliver regular clinical sessions across NBT Urology's sites.
  • You will work a Job Plan of 10 PAs per week to help the service achieve its targets in both cancer and non-cancer urology.

Person Specification Qualifications And Registration
  • FRCS (or equivalent)
  • Must have CCT in Urology and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview. Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date. at the time of the appointment.
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
  • Experience in management of stone disease including PCNL and complex ureteroscopy.
  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
