Job Overview

This is a substantive full‑time consultant post in the Plastic Surgery Department with a major interest in microvascular breast reconstructive surgery. The post will cover the regional service primarily serving Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol, providing specialist breast cancer and reconstructive surgical expertise.

The successful candidate will join Mr Sherif Wilson, Miss Philippa Jackson and Miss Naomi Patel and will deliver elective theatre and outpatient care, participate in the Oncoplastic Breast MDT, and take part in the Plastic Surgery Service and On‑Call rota. Regular cross‑cover of patients by team members is expected.

Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Responsibilities include management of a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions such as skin cancer, hand surgery, lower limb trauma, breast reconstruction, head and neck malignancy, sarcoma, burns service, and laser therapy. Working across combined clinics with other specialists (head and neck surgery, Ortho‑Plastics, oncologists, dermatology) is part of the role.

The postholder will operate in dedicated plastic and burns general anaesthetic operating theatres, three local anaesthetic theatres, and will have access to 24‑hour general emergency theatres for out‑of‑hours trauma cases. Secretarial support and office accommodation are provided.

An on‑call commitment to delivering an emergency adult and paediatric plastic surgery service is required. The role demands a high level of clinical experience and competence in general plastic surgery, and the winner will join a further 24 consultants offering plastic surgery and burns services across the Northern South West region.

Qualifications And Registration
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent (for non‑UK applicants)
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • Completion of CCT in Plastic Surgery and entry on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of appointment
Desirable Criteria – Qualifications
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MS)
Training and Experience
  • Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 10 years postgraduate experience, including higher surgical/medical training and three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post or equivalent responsibility
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of routine plastic surgery conditions
  • Specialist knowledge, training and interest in management of microsurgical breast reconstruction
  • Experience and training in surgical management of common, non‑specialised conditions in children, including trauma
Desirable Criteria – Training
  • Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship or demonstrable equivalent experience
  • Breast Microsurgery Fellowship or demonstrable equivalent experience
Further Training, Management, Audit
  • Evidence of recent CME and reasonable training progression at this stage of career
  • Experience in audit projects, with written outcomes
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues and political context
  • Up‑to‑date evidence of completion of audits
  • Completion of a general management course or programme
  • Demonstrated involvement in clinical directorate management
Research, Teaching, Publications
  • Proven teaching ability and willingness to undertake teaching of medical under‑graduates and postgraduates
  • Proven track record of research related to breast reconstruction and microsurgery, including publications in peer‑reviewed journals
