The successful applicant will join the NBT Neurospine team. The team currently comprises of five Orthopaedic Spine surgeons and five Neurosurgical trained Spine surgeons.
The postholder will be responsible for the management of complex spinal conditions under their care.
Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC's specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate is expected to carry out independently and competently complex spine surgery and ideally to be able to provide support with the treatment of intradural spinal conditions. As such it is essential that the successful candidate has a Neurosurgical trained background. The successful candidate must liaise with consultant colleagues regarding the continuity of care of when the postholder is absent.
As part of a large, collaborative department, the postholder will work closely with consultant colleagues to maintain high standards of care, actively engage in MDTs, audit, teaching, and service development, and support the wider aims of the department and the South West Neurosurgical Network.

Person Specification Qualification and Registration- Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
- CCT in Neurosurgery or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview - CESR - European Community Rights Maintain - Must be on GMC Specialist Register at time of the appointment or, if a Specialist Registrar (SpR) in training, must be within six months of completion of CCT at time of interview.
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
- Post-CCT Fellowship/Consultant experience in Spines.
- Minimum of seven years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
- Evidence of appropriate post fellowship experience
- Demonstration of their ability to carry out independently and competently complex spinal upper cervical spine surgery.
- Training in intradural spinal conditions.
- Training in Spinal dysraphism.
- Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
- Experience in audit project and written up.
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
- Knowledge of political context within which we operate.
- Completion of a general management course or programme.
- Proven teaching ability.
- Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates.
- Proven track record in research.
- Willingness to undertake further research.
- Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.
- Ability to teach effectively.
- Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
- Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.
- Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of the NMSK Directorate. To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole.
- Good written communication skills. Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues, and staff at all levels.
- Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff.
- Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post, including on-call commitments. (low frequency category A on call)
