This 6 month Specialty Registrar (ST3+ or equivalent) role at Southmead Hospital offers exceptional clinical exposure across Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General Internal Medicine, including tertiary-level liver disease.

You’ll take a leading role in managing complex inpatient cases, supervising specialist ward teams, delivering referral services, and developing your endoscopy and outpatient skills through dedicated training opportunities. The post can be tailored to your career ambitions, with additional opportunities in research, quality improvement, medical education and service development.

If you’re seeking a role that combines clinical challenge, professional growth, hands‑on procedural experience and the chance to make a real difference to patient care, we’d love you to join our team.

The role includes supervising the specialist ward team, delivering the inpatient specialty referral service, and participating in outpatient clinics and endoscopy training lists. The post holder will also contribute to the General Internal Medicine on call rota, leading the acute medical take and providing senior support to the out of hours medical team.

The Gastroenterology and Hepatology ward typical cares for 19–24 inpatients with a broad range of complex gastroenterology and hepatology conditions, while also providing specialist input for patients requiring critical care support in the Intensive Care Unit.

The department offers broad exposure to luminal gastroenterology and hepatology, including tertiary level liver disease. The clinical content of the post can be tailored to the educational needs and career aspirations of the successful applicant.

Timetable:
On average, 1 outpatient Gastroenterology or Hepatology clinic per week and a dedicated endoscopy training list. Additional endoscopy experience is available through inpatient and ad hoc service lists.

The rest of the post is dedicated to inpatient specialist care and delivery of a comprehensive inpatient referral service across the Trust. There are also opportunities to participate in clinical research, quality improvement, medical education and service development.
