The Department of Religion and Theology is seeking a qualified and versatile Lecturer in Comparative Religions, with expertise in Asian religions.

This is a fixed term maternity cover 0.7 FTE role starting on 1 Sept. 2026 through to 31 st of August 2027 or the return of the current post holder.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching modules on Asian religions, with a particular emphasis on Buddhism, as well as a module on Religions and Material Culture. They will also convene an introductory module on Approaches to the Study of Religions and co-teach a fieldwork-based module. The post therefore requires both a specialist knowledge of Buddhism and other Asian religious traditions and an ability to teach religion from comparative, methodological, and theoretical perspectives.

In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to other teaching-related activities, including the supervision of undergraduate dissertations and personal tutoring, and undertake administrative duties within the department, as appropriate.

You should apply if you hold a PhD in a relevant (or be near completion of their doctorate) and have the knowledge and expertise appropriate to teaching areas specified at mainly undergraduate levels. You should have the ability to work collaboratively with others in teaching and scholarship, to engage and enthuse students in both small and large group teaching and to provide effective academic support for students, including one to one.
