Title:

Senior Bridges Engineer

Requisition

Working for us, you’ll be delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance life and protect our shared future. Our people are driven by a set of strong values, based on safety, insight and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Structures/Bridges Engineer to join our award-winning and growing Consulting Structures Team in the South West
. The role will primarily involve working on the South West Scheme Delivery Framework for National Highways, with opportunities to work on complex schemes across the UK. As a team, we co-locate with our client at offices in Cardiff, Exeter and Bristol
, attending the office three days a week with the remaining days worked remotely.

The work spans from feasibility and optioneering through to design and construction. We work across the National Highways network in the South West, which includes large and unique viaducts, culverts, under and over bridges of varying forms, ages, and complexities. We could be designing a strengthening scheme, completing maintenance refurbishments, or executing safety improvements. The variety of scopes and structures on the network means that no two projects are the same.

This opportunity would suit a developing Engineer who is Chartered or Incorporated status, with an understanding of the DMRB and Eurocodes with respect to highway bridge design, strengthening, refurbishment, and assessment. It is a chance to work on structures locally and see the impact of your work day-to-day on a network you would use. You would be part of a team of around 25 engineers locally of varying levels, supported by 350+ Structures Engineers across the UK with a variety of specialisms.

Our focus is on developing and growing organically. As an Engineer, you will contribute significantly to this process and gain valuable exposure for your career development.

The Role Responsibilities

  • Taking ownership and leading projects from start to finish, from preparing the quotation to handover.
  • Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost, and programme criteria.
  • Overseeing the actions of more junior staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Delegated Engineer.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Managing a small, locally based, single-discipline technical team and taking responsibility for the delivery of their workload.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work-winning function.
  • Drive effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
What You Will Bring To Us
  • Developed experience and expertise within the Structures field, probably gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
  • An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and the Client’s requirements.

  • Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g. LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
  • Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
  • Has a good understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
  • Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status with the ICE or IStruct
