and Scope
The Solar Design Engineer works within the Solar Design Team to formulate, evaluate and prepare technical analysis and specifications for public‑sector, industrial and commercial schemes during feasibility studies, scheme design and project implementation. The engineer assists in the trial and development of new products and technologies, and provides complex technical duties and business support activities across multiple projects.
- Support planning, development, procurement and implementation of a variety of projects.
- Ensure project scope, goals and deliverables are accurately specified, budgeted and planned to meet the objectives of the client’s "Project Brief".
- Assist in finalisation of project design, equipment selection and layout.
- Provide technical support to the project implementation team throughout the implementation period.
- Attend HAZOP and technical review meetings as required.
- Attend site to review commissioning and performance trials.
- Define project tasks and resource requirements.
- Develop full‑scale project plans.
- Assemble and coordinate project resources.
- Assist planning and scheduling project timelines.
- Ensure compliance with Health and Safety Regulations.
- Perform quality assurance.
- Conduct project evaluations and assessment of results.
- Review new and existing technical developments to ensure sustainability for client developments.
- Review contractor activities in line with project requirements and company procedures.
- Coach and support the operational side of engineering before, during and after project implementation.
- Ensure projects meet the requirements of the client and all relevant regulatory bodies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Prepare detailed engineering proposals in a timely manner.
- Accurately interpret the client’s technical specification and produce a compliant technical proposal, offering more suitable alternatives where appropriate.
- Interpret client’s commercial requirements and identify or mitigate any commercial or contractual risks to the company.
- Ensure proposals pricing and estimating are in line with company sales and marketing strategies, charge‑out rates and engineering resource availability.
- Participate in bid review, bid clarification and sales handover meetings.
- Write high‑quality technical documents and reports and present them to both internal and external audiences.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders to collate accurate data for proposal preparation.
- Maintain a sales and marketing focus in all proposal activities and stakeholder contacts.
- Provide resilience support to other departments as needed.
- Strong engineering experience gained within a design or engineering projects environment.
- Relevant engineering qualifications or a degree in a relevant field; electrical engineering background or engineers with electrical works experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge and working experience of national standards such as BS7671 18th Edition, IET Code of Practice, MCS standards and other relevant regulations.
- Knowledge and experience in battery storage systems is preferable.
- Good knowledge of working on Excel or relevant PV software for yield and self‑consumption analysis.
- Demonstrable design experience using relevant PV software (PVSyst, PVCase, Autocad, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of solar PV components such as modules, inverters, mounting system, cables and containment.
- Experience designing different configurations (string vs optimizers, string vs central, rooftop, ground‑mount, carport).
