About the Role
As a result of continued success and growth in the UK, we’re looking for a full-time Principal Structural Engineer to join our team working on Nuclear New Build projects, focusing on Nuclear Island buildings of Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C, and similar projects. You will reinforce your technical skills on complex Nuclear Power Plant buildings, and collaborate in a multi-cultural environment to deliver outstanding results for clients.
You will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, integrity, and reliability of the nuclear power plant structures. You will manage and lead an international team in addition to various aspects of the design and structural analysis of reinforced concrete or steel structures.
Responsibilities- Manage and lead an international team responsible for critical buildings within the Nuclear Island.
- Design and analyse reinforced concrete structures for the Nuclear Buildings of EPR nuclear power plants.
- Perform structural calculations and finite element modelling using ANSYS APDL or similar software, ensuring compliance with Eurocode, ETC-C and other applicable codes.
- Ensure the structural integrity and resilience of reinforced concrete structures under loads such as seismic, dynamic, construction sequence effects, and environmental factors.
- Collaborate with detailing, drafting, BIM coordination and technical direction teams to ensure design coordination and integration.
- Assess design changes and propose necessary modifications based on structural calculations.
- Prepare detailed design drawings, specifications and construction documentation for reinforced concrete structures.
- Provide structural assessments and evaluations during construction and technical support as needed.
- Work with construction contractors and site teams to resolve structural issues during construction.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers and draftsmen involved in design and detailing.
- Collaborate with the client, construction team, principal designer and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with nuclear safety regulations.
With a background in the nuclear industry or another highly heavy industry sector, you’ll have an established career in Civil Structural Engineering, ideally with a Master’s in Civil Engineering or equivalent. You will also have the following:
- Proven experience in Structural Civil Work, Civil Design, RC detailing, steel structures with ETT-C or Eurocodes or other relevant codes.
- Proven experience designing and analysing reinforced concrete structures for nuclear power plants, specifically with European Pressurized Reactors (EPR).
- Knowledge of nuclear safety principles, regulations, and standards governing the design and construction of nuclear power plant structures.
- Proficiency in structural analysis software such as ANSYS, SAP
2000 or similar tools. - Familiarity with Finite Element software such as ANSYS APDL, Robot or similar tools.
- Strong understanding of seismic analysis and design principles for nuclear structures.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors and regulatory authorities.
- Prior experience in the design and construction of reinforced concrete structures in a nuclear or high-risk industry is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of construction processes, materials and quality control procedures related to nuclear structures.
