Position: Graduate Geo-Environmental Engineer (Permanent)
Graduate Geoenvironmental Consultant - Bristol (Permanent)

Location:

Bristol (office-based with site work as required)

Contract:

Permanent, with a six‑month probationary period

Working hours:

Monday-Friday, 9:00-17:30 with a one‑hour lunch break (37.5 hours per week). Flexible working may be available with line manager approval. Some early starts or late finishes may be required for site work.

About the Role

A fantastic opportunity is available for a graduate to join the Bristol team as a Graduate Geoenvironmental Consultant. You will receive training and hands‑on experience in:

Phase 1 desk studies and site walkovers

Phase 2 site investigations (drill rig supervision, sampling, trial pitting)

Groundwater and ground‑gas monitoring

Scheduling environmental and geotechnical laboratory testing

Factual and interpretative report writing

Supervising earthworks and remediation projects

About You

The ideal candidate is a recent graduate in geology, earth science, or a related discipline, eager to begin a career in engineering consultancy. While prior experience is beneficial, the focus is on finding someone who aligns with the organisation's values and contributes positively to the team.

Training, Development & Progression

You will be supported in your Continuing Professional Development (CPD), with training needs identified collaboratively to meet both personal and business goals. You will also be expected to maintain and develop your technical knowledge through independent reading and learning.

Performance reviews take place annually, with interim reviews every six months.

Role Responsibilities

Below is an overview of typical responsibilities. Additional tasks may be assigned where appropriate, with training and support provided.

Project & Client Management

Booking and managing subcontractors in line with project scope and internal procedures

Communicating issues or variations promptly to the Project Director

Reviewing subcontractor invoices and identifying discrepancies

Assisting with maintaining the approved supplier database

Collating and checking subcontractor health & safety information

Managing simple projects (e.g., single‑activity fieldwork) including financial oversight and invoicing

Supporting ground investigation design discussions

Ensuring appropriate allocation of resources and equipment

Communicating project progress and findings to clients

Resolving client issues within 48 hours or arranging alternative actions

Conducting client follow‑ups as required

Fieldwork

Preparing health & safety documentation

Ensuring compliance with all relevant H&S procedures

Reporting fieldwork or equipment issues

Soil logging to relevant standards; developing rock logging skills

Conducting geotechnical and environmental sampling

Preparing driller's instructions and monitoring well specifications

Assisting with and progressing toward supervising small ground investigations

Managing infiltration testing, falling/rising head tests, and gas/groundwater monitoring

Conducting GPS surveys and site reconnaissance

Supporting gas membrane and remediation validation inspections

Carrying out other field tasks as required

Technical (Office-Based)

Preparing exploratory hole logs and becoming familiar with Open Ground/AGS

Data entry and manipulation (CBRs, infiltration tests, monitoring data, etc.)

Preparing Phase 1 Desk Studies and sections of ground investigation reports

Scheduling laboratory testing with support

Preparing client feedback emails

Developing understanding of environmental risk assessment, including GQRA and statistical methods

Learning basic geotechnical principles and foundation advice

Becoming familiar with DoWCoP principles
